Evaluation of Growing Media for Seedling Emergence and Seedling Growth of Red Lady Papaya

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of different growing media on seedling emergence and seedling production of Red lady papaya at Horticulture farm, Sher-eBangla Agriculture University. Different growing media were used in this experiment following Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Growing media showed considerable positive effect on all the studied characteristics. The medium of cocopellet (T10) gave the maximum root number/plant (16.3), SPAD value (47.7) and least days (11.7) required for 80% germination. Cocopellet (T10) and Soil + Vermicompost + Sand + Trichoderma, 2:2:1:1 (T8 ) found to be maximum germination percentage, stem width and leaves number in papaya seedling. T8 gave highest root length (8.1 cm) and seedling height (17.2 cm). In view of overall performance, T8 and T10 found to be effective medium for red lady papaya seedling production performed the best in all parameter over rest of the treatment.

Objectives:

The present study is to evaluate the performance of different growing media viz. soil, cocodust, sand, vermicompost, Trichoderma and cocopellet for enhance seed germination and seedling growth of Red Lady papaya.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the horticultural farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during July to August, 2018 to evaluate different growing media for seedling emergence and seedling growth of papaya following out Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Red lady papaya variety was used in this study. The experiment comprised with ten treatments viz. T1: Soil, T2: Cocodust,T3: Soil + Cocodust (1:1), T4:Soil + Vermicompost (1:1), T5:Cocodust+ Vermicompost (1:1), T6 : Soil + Vermicompost + Sand (2:2:1), T7: Cocodust + Vermicompost + Sand (2:2:1), T8:Soil + Vermicompost + Sand + Trichoderma (2:2:1:1), T9:Cocodust + Vermicompost + Sand + Trichoderma (2:2:1:1) and T10: Coco pellet. Growing media was prepared and seedling trays were filled with mixture as per treatments. Seeds (one in each cave of tray) were sown at approximately 10-15 mm deep in the different growing. A total of 300 seeds were sown according to treatment which collected from Taki seed company, Japan. Data on seedling emergence, 80% germination, stem width (mm), root length (cm), leaf number and seedling height (cm) were recorded and analyzed for all the treatments considered. All seedling growth parameters were measured at the time of transplanting (45 days after sowing; DAS) in ten randomly-selected seedlings. Data on 80% germination were recorded at 2 days intervals from the first sign of germination until no further seeds germinated. SPAD reading was measured through SPAD-502 chlorometer. Rootrelated parameters recorded through slide calipers at 45 DAS. Differences between different treatments were evaluated by Least Significant Difference Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded that the performance of growing media containing Soil + Vermicompost + Sand + Trichoderma (2:2:1:1) and Cocopellet media were found significantly superior over rest of the treatments in all the growth parameters of papaya seedlings.
