Collection and Evaluation of Custard Apple Germplasm (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fruit characteristic of four custard apple germplasm were studied in the laboratory of Fruit Research Station, BARI, Binodpur, Rajshahi during the fruiting season of 2018 (August-September). The result indicated that wide range of diversity existed in fruit weight, pulp weight, TSS, pulp content and skin weight etc. The weight of a matured fruit varied from 120.5 g to 129.4 g. The highest fruit weight (129.4 g) was observed in AS Raj-001 followed by AS Raj-002 (122.6 g) and the lowest fruit weight was in AS Raj-004 (120.5 g). The highest (81.6 g) skin weight was measured in AS Raj-001 and the lowest skin weight was in AS Raj-002 (49.0 g). The maximum (60%) edible portion was measured in AS Raj-002. TSS (%) varied from 23.3 to 24.3 but there was no significant difference in TSS (%) among the lines.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at laboratory of Fruit Research Station, BARI, Binodpur, Rajshahi during August to September 2018. With the view of selection of superior custard apple germplasm, four different types of fruit were procured from different places of Rajshahi. Five fruits of each germplasm were studied for fruit characteristics in the laboratory of FRS, Rajshahi.

Achievement/Findings:

Wide variation was observed among the accessions in respect of fruit characteristics. The weight of fruit varied from 120.5 g to 129.4 g. The highest fruit weight (129.4 g) was observed in AS Raj-001 followed by AS Raj-002 (122.6 g) and the lowest was in AS Raj-004 (120.5 g). The highest (81.6 g) skin weight was measured in AS Raj-001 and the lowest was in AS Raj-002 (49.0 g). Maximum (60 %) edible portion was measured in AS Raj-002. The result showed the similarity with the Indian cultivars Balanagar, Britsh guinea and Red sitaphal (Anon, 1987). TSS (%) varied from 23.3 to 24.3 but there was no significant difference in TSS (%) among the lines. The result showed the similarity with the result of Anon (1987). The fruit shape varied from heart to roundish.

This was third-year result, AS Raj-002 showed better performance on the basis of fruit weight, skin weight, no of Seeds / Fruit, edible portion and TSS value. Further study is needed for select suitable variety.
