Collection and Evaluation of Custard Apple Genotypes (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on collection and evaluation of some custard apple genotypes was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapainawabganj during 2018-19. Sixteen genotypes were collected from five upazilas of Chapainawabganj district. Seeds were sown into seed bed and after germination all of the genotypes were transferred into main field between 2015 and 2016. Two to three genotypes among sixteen genotypes produced fruits for this year. Harvesting was not started due to fruits were immature. So data on plant growth characters were recorded.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Horticulture Research Station, BARI, Chapainawabganj during 2018-19. Sixteen genotypes were included in this experiment. Fruits were collected from farmers’ homestead of different upazilas of Chapainawabganj and Rajshahi and then taken into laboratory and fruit characteristics were recorded accordingly. Seeds were sown into seed bed and after germination all of the genotypes were transferred into main field between 2015 and 2016. Only two to three genotypes among sixteen genotypes produced fruits. As harvesting was not started, data were recorded on plant growth characters.

Achievement/Findings:

Plant growth characters of 16 custard apple genotypes have been shown in Table 1. All genotypes were erect in nature. In case of plant height, the highest plant height (2.84 m) was recorded in the genotype AR Cha-03 and the minimum height (1.64) was recorded in AR Cha-05. Base girth varied from 8.67cm to 15cm. The maximum base girth (15cm) was found from The genotype AR Cha-03 while the minimum (8.34cm) from AR Cha-05. The canopy (spreading) is a continuous process that was observed in 16 custard apple genotypes. The genotype AR Cha-07 showed the highest (2m) canopy spreading in East- West direction while the genotypes AR Cha-0.5 showed lowest (1.17m) canopy spreading in East- West direction. In case of north-south direction, AR Cha-13 gave the highest (2.1m) canopy spreading in north-south direction while the lowest (1.2m) was recorded from the genotype AR Cha-02. After transplanting 16 custard apple genotypes in the main field, this is the 2^st year observation result. So this experiment will be continued.
