Intercropping Papaya (carica Papaya L) with Mungbean(k/£/*fl Radiata (l) Wilczek)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A Held experiment was conducted at BARI Regional Station, Ishurdi for two consecutive years to find out the optimum number of rows of mungbean that could be intercropped within papaya rows for higher profitability. Among five intercropping combinations, papaya + 6 rows of mungbean produced maximum papaya equivalent yield (100,623 kg/ha) and the highest land equivalent ratio (1.91). The same combination also produced the highest net return ( US$12,720/ha), benefit cost ratio (8.29), replacement value of intercropping (1.19) and monetary advantage ( US$ 6,892/ha)

Objectives:

The study was undertaken to find out the optimum number of rows of mungbean need to be intercropped with papaya for higher profitability.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted during March to December of 1993 and 1994 at Calcareous Grey Flood plain soil of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh. The soil is silty loam with pH 7.2. Pure papaya (2m x 2m), pure mungbean (30cm x 10cm) and 5 intercropping combinations (4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 rows of mungbean, respectively intercropped within the interspace of papaya) were tested in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Fifteen kg of cowdung, 250g of triple superphosphate, 250g of gypsum, and 5g of zinc oxide were applied per pit of papaya basally. Three hundred g of urea, and 300g of muriate of potash per pit were applied in 3 equal instalments starting after 2 month of transplanting at 2 month interval. Papaya seedling of 'Shahi' variety were transplanted on March 3, 1993 and March 5, 1994. The mungbean variety 'Kanti1 was line sown 10 days after planting of papaya. Intercultural operation was done properly. Fruits were thinned as and when necessary. Papaya was harvested when they became yellowish. Mungbean pods were collected by hand picking. Data on yield and yield attributes of papaya and mungbean were recorded and analyzed . statistically. Papaya equivalent yield (PEY), land equivalent ratio (LER) and economic analyses were computed. The replacement value of intercropping (RVI) were calculated using the formula of Moseley (1994). RVI = (aP, + bP2)/(aMl-c) where P, and P2 are the yields of crop 1 and2 in polyculture; a and b are the respective price of these crops; M, is the yield and c is the input cost of the primary crop in monoculture. Monetary advantage index (MAI) were also computed following Ali and Mishra (1993). MAI = Value of combined intercrop yield X (LER1 )/LER where LER is land equivalent ratio.

Thus, the results of the study inferred that six rows of mungbean may be profitably grown within the interspace of papaya in Ishurdi region.
