Collection and Evaluation of Some Pomegranate Germplasm (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifteen germplasm of pomegranate were evaluated for their performance at RHRS, Chapai Nawabganj during 2018-2019. Flowering was occurred mid-April in PG Cha-002, PG Cha-004 and PG Cha-008 though flowering of PG Cha-012 and PG Cha-013 were in mid-May. The highest number of fruits (20) was recorded in PG Cha-009 followed by PG Cha-004 (16) whereas the lowest number of fruits per plant (01) was produced in PG Cha-008 followed by PG Cha-005 and PG Cha-014 (02). The fruits were harvested from only three germplasm due to fruits were found rotten in others germplasm. PG Cha-012 showed the maximum aver. Fruit weight (448 g), edible portion (58 %) and TSS (15.34 %) among the three germplasm.

Objectives:

To study the variability in pomegranate and to raise grafts or with the hope of getting chance seedlings.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, BARI, ChapaiNawabganj during 2018-2019. Fifteen germplasm were included in this experiment. Each germplasm had three plants. Three germplasm PG Cha-002, PG Cha-004 and PG Cha-008 were selected locally and others (fruits) were procured from different market places of Chapai Nawabganj and Rajshahi. The grafts of selected materials were collected and the saplings from the seeds were prepared and planted in the orchard to see their performance. Among the germplasm, no fruit of any plant of any accession was ripe. The individual plants within an accession were found not to be similar with fruit characteristics. Data on plant growth characters, date of flowering and number of fruits were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

A few Fruits were harvested from three germplasm although Fruits of all germplasm were bagged to protect from these disease and insect invasion. Among these germplasm, PG Cha-012 was found better. This experiment should be continued.
