Evaluation of Full-sib and Half-sib Families Grown from Bu Papaya-1

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to study the different characters and character associations in Full-sib and half-sib families of BU Papaya-1.The study was carried out at the experimental farm, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during January 2014 to December 2014. The results indicate that different plant characters like plant height, days to first flowering, first fruiting height, number of nodes, number of female plants and fruit characters like number of fruits, fruit length, central cavity length, individual fruit weight, pulp thickness, fruit yield of full-sib family showed superior and significant results compared to half-fib family of BU Papaya-1. In most of the cases the genotypic correlation co-efficient were higher than the corresponding phenotypic correlation co-efficient and fruit yield expressed highly significant and positive correlation with number of fruits, flowers per inflorescence, fruit length, pulp thickness and individual fruit weight both at genotypic and phenotypic levels. High positive direct effects were observed for number of fruits, fruit length, pulp thickness, individual fruit weight of full-sib and half-sib families of BU Papaya-1 on fruit yield which is the reflection of significant positive correlation of these traits with fruit yield.

Objectives:

The present experiment was carried out to evaluate full-sib and half-sib families grown from BU Papaya 1.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur during February 2014 to December 2014. Forty eight plants of open pollinated genotype (001-5 x 001-5) and 48 plants of cross pollinated genotype (001-5 x 001-5) were used as the experimental materials for the study. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design with four replications. Each replication consists of 12 plants. All the intercultural operations such as weeding, fertilization, irrigation and insect-pests and disease management practices were followed as recommended for papaya cultivation. Data on plant characters were recorded during first flash; second flash and ripening stage and fruit characters were recorded after harvesting of fruits according to papaya descriptor. The data were analyzed by standard statistical computer program MSTAT-C for mean, co-efficient of variation (CV %), standard deviation (SD). Tukey’s test (T Test) was performed for all the characters to test the differences between the means of the genotypes. PB Tools software was used for analyzing genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficient. Correlation coefficient was further partitioned into components of direct and indirect effects by path coefficient analysis originally developed by R Core Team (2014).
