Collection and Evaluation of Water Chesnut Germplasm (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three lines of water chestnut (Trapa bispinosa Roxb) such as TB Jam-001, TB Jam-002and TB Jam-003 were evaluated at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during the year 2018-19. The highest stem length (2.49m), leaf length (5.74cm), leaf breadth (7.66cm), petiole length (12.47cm), individual fruit weight (18.5g), and pulp wt. (9.1g) were recorded in TB Jam-002 and the lowest in TB Jam-003. The highest yield per hectare (281.6t) was observed in TB Jam-002 and the lowest (82.9t) yield per hectare in TB Jam-003.

Objectives:

To test their potentiality through critical evaluation and release for commercial cultivation

Methodology:

Three lines of water chestnut germplasm were collected from Dewanganj, Jamalpur and were planted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur in March 2018. Weeding, irrigation and other management practices were done as and when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest stem length (2.49m), leaf length (5.74cm), leaf breadth (7.66cm), petiole length (12.47cm), individual fruit weight (18.5g), and pulp wt. (9.1g) were recorded in TB Jam-002 and the lowest in TB Jam-003. The highest yield per hectare (281.6t) was observed in TB Jam-002 and the lowest (82.9t) yield per hectare in TB Jam-003. Considering growth and yield contributing characters it can be concluded that the line TB Jam-002 performed better. The experiment will be continued.
