Effect of Different Rootstocks on the Growth and Yield of BARI Satkara-1 (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at Citrus Research Station (CRS), Jaintapur, Sylhet during 2017-18 to 2018-19 to find out the performance of BARI Satkara-1 using different citrus rootstocks viz., pummelo, rangpur lime and rough lemon. Highest plant height (3.35 m) was recorded in pummelo rootstock followed by rough lemon (2.53 cm) whereas lowest (2.25 cm) was found in rangpur lime rootstock. Maximum base girth (23.33 cm) was found in rangpur lime whereas minimum (16.67 cm) in rough lemon rootstock. Plant canopy was recorded highest (2.2 × 2.6 cm) in pummelo rootstock. Rough lemon rootstock exhibited excellent growth condition.

Objectives:

To continue the efforts of selecting suitable rootstocks for better growth and development of the concern crops. Hence the study was undertaken.

Methodology:

There are different types of rootstocks viz. pummelo, rough lemon and Rongpur lime were used as treatment and BARI Satkara-1 was grafted on them. The graftages were planted in the experimental plot on June, 2016 with a spacing of 3×3 m. Each plant was fertilized with 15 kg cowdung, 300 g urea, 150 g TSP and 100 g MoP in two splits before and after rainy season (Mandol et al., 2014). The saplings were irrigated at an interval of 15 days. Cypermethrin (Ripcord 1.0 ml/L of water) was applied to reduce lemon butterfly/ leaf minor infestation when new flushes emerged. Weeding was done at an intervals of growth because rapid growth of weeds due to high rainfall in the region. Data were recorded on plant height, base girth canopy spreading, number of branches/plant, leaf size and growth condition and analyzed by MSTST-C programme. DMRT was performed for interpretation of results (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum base girth (23.33 cm) was found in rangpur lime whereas minimum (16.67 cm) in rough lemon rootstock. Plant canopy was recorded highest (2.2 × 2.6 cm) in pummelo rootstock. Rough lemon rootstock exhibited excellent growth condition. The plants are now at vegetative stage and the growth is satisfactory. Final conclusion will be done after 8-10 years of evaluation.
