Effect of Foliar Application of Zinc on Growth, Yield and Fruit Quality of Guava (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment to find out the optimum level of zinc for better growth, yield and fruit quality of guava and to increase fertilizer uptake was performed at the fruit research field of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during October 2018-February 2019. BARI Peyara-2 was used as variety in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Six treatments were considered in the study with different levels of Zn as T₁: Control- no ZnSO4 solution, T₂: 0.30% ZnSO4 solution, T₃: 0.40% ZnSO4 solution, T₄: 0.50% ZnSO4 solution, T₅: 0.60% ZnSO4 solution, T₆: 0.70% ZnSO4 solution. In winter season, plant growth in terms of number of leaf per branch (29), length of leaf (12.06 cm), width of leaf (6.37 cm), length of shoot (52.28 cm) and shoot diameter (0.55 cm) was recorded maximum in plant, which were treated with 0.50% ZnSO4 solution and minimum number was noted from the control (no ZnSO4 solution). The highest fruit yield (28.73kg plant-¹) due to the highest individual fruit weight (393.16 g) and maximum number of fruits per plant (73) was found in the treatment T₄(0.50% ZnSO4 solution) followed by T₅and T₆treatments. The lowest fruit yield was observed in T₁(Control- no ZnSO4 solution) (15.77kg plant-¹). Maximum TSS (%) was noted from the treatment T₄(10.53). and the minimum TSS (%) was recorded in T₁(9.30). The highest increase in terms of all the growth parameters of BARI Guava-2 over control was noted from the treatment T₄(0.50% ZnSO4 solution). However, all the parameters resulted in un-satisfactory results when plants are not treated with foliar Zn fertilizer.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum level of zinc for better growth, yield and fruit quality of guava and to increase fertilizer uptake.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the fruit research field of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during during October 2018-February 2019. BARI Peyara-2 was used as variety in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Six treatments were included in the study with different levels of Zn as T₁: Control- no ZnSO4 solution, T₂: 0.30% ZnSO4 solution, T₃: 0.40% ZnSO4 solution, T₄: 0.50% ZnSO4 solution, T₅: 0.60% ZnSO4 solution, T₆: 0.70% ZnSO4 solution. The plants were fertilized with 30 kg cowdung, 167g Urea, 300g TSP, 300g MoP, 50g MgSo₄ and 10g Boric acid per plant in the month of October. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as per requirement. The samples of the soil were collected from experimental field at 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm depth for laboratory test. Soil analysis of the experimental field indicated Zn deficiency. The data on the following parameters such as number of leaf per branch, length of leaf, width of leaf, length of shoot, shoot diameter, length of fruit, breadth of fruit, individual fruit weight, number of fruits per plant, TSS and yield were recorded. Growth data was taken from before and about fifty to fifty five days after application of different zinc concentrations. The collected data were tabulated and statistically analyzed with appropriate design of experiment (Gomez and Gomez,1984) adopting statistical program MSTAT-C.

Achievement/Findings:

All the treatments resulted in better growth and yield. Among them, T₄(0.50% ZnSO4 solution) and then T₅ (0.60% ZnSO4 solution) were noted promising. Foliar spraying of Zn might increase plant growth as well as yield and quality of guava. The experiment should be continued in the next year for further evaluation.
