Development of Fertilizer Management Package for Dragon Fruit Cultivation in Bangladesh (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Research Centre, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during 2018 to develop a fertilizer management package for Dragon fruit (Hylocereusspp) cultivation in Bangladesh. BARI Dragon fruit-1 variety was used in the experiment. Two plants per pillar were transplanted in April, 2014 maintaining 2.0 m x 2.0 m spacing. The experiment comprise of five treatments of the following doses of fertilizers: Package-1: Urea=100g/month, TSP=100g/month, MOP=100g/month and 2kg Manure/month; Package-2: Urea=50g/4 months, TSP =50g/4 months, MOP=50g/4 months and 2kg manure/4 months; Package-3: Urea = 200g/2 months, TSP= 200g/2 months, MOP = 200g/2 months; Package-4: Urea = 200g/2 months, TSP = 200g/2 months, MOP = 200g/2 months and 5kg manure/4 months and Package-5: Urea = 100g/4 months, TSP = 100 g/4 months, MOP = 50g/4 months and 15kg manure/year.The results revealed that there were significant differences in all the parameters under study except days to first flowering among the treatments as influenced by different fertilizer packages. The tallest plant (272 cm) was observed in T₁ treatment. The treatment T₁exhibited the highest number of branches (73). The highest number of fruits per plant (15.63) was noted in T₄ treatment. The biggest fruit (205 g) was observed in the T₄ treatment. The longest fruit (9.08 cm) was observed in treatment T₄. The maximum fruit breadth (7.17 cm) was obtained in treatment T₄. The highest TSS (13.87%) was recorded in T2 treatment. The maximum edible portion (58%) was observed inT₂. The minimum edible portion (50 %) was found in T₄. The highest fruit yield (3.21 kg per plant) was observed in treatment T_{4 .}On the other hand, the lowest fruit yield (1.75 kg/plant) was found in (T₂) treatment.

Objectives:

To develop a fertilizer management package for Dragon fruit cultivation in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Research Centre, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during 2018 to develop a fertilizer management package for Dragon fruit cultivation in Bangladesh. The experimental site belongs to the Agro-Ecological Zone 8 (Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Flood Plain) and 9 (Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain) at 24⁰56^/11^// N latitude, 89⁰55^/54^// E longitude and at an altitude of 16.46 m. BARI Dragon fruit-1 variety was used in the experiment. Two plants per pillar were transplanted in April, 2014 maintaining 2.0 x 2.0 m spacing. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. The experiment comprise of five treatments of the following doses of fertilizers: Package-1: Urea=100g/month, TSP=100g/month, MOP=100g/month and 2kg Manure/month; Package-2: Urea=50g/4 months, TSP =50g/4 months, MOP=50g/4 months and 2kg manure/4 months; Package-3: Urea = 200g/2 months, TSP= 200g/2 months, MOP = 200g/2 months; Package-4: Urea = 200g/2 months, TSP = 200g/2 months, MOP = 200g/2 months and 5kg manure/4 months and Package-5: Urea = 100g/4 months, TSP = 100 g/4 months, MOP = 50g/4 months and 15kg manure/year. Fertilizers were applied as per package. Intercultural operations like weeding, irrigation, pruning disease and insect management were done as per requirement. Data on plant height, number of branches, months after transplanting to flower bud initiation, days to first flowering, number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight, fruit length, fruit breadth, skin weight, skin thickness, pulp thickness, TSS, edible portion and yield per plant were taken duly. Data in respect of vegetative, yield and fruit characters were recorded and measured characters were statistically analyzed following a programme Statistical Tools for Agricultural Research (STAR) which was developed by IRRI.

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that application of fertilizers according to ; Package-4: Urea = 200g/2 months, TSP = 200g/2 months, MOP = 200g/2 months and 5kg manure/4 months would be optimum for higher yield of dragon fruit in Bangladesh. So, the experiment will be continued in the next year for confirmation of the result.
