Effect of Gibberellic Acid (ga3) on Seedlessness of Rambutan (nephelium Lappacum Linn.) (2018-2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was performed at the nursery near Horticulture Research Centre, Gazipur during February 2019 to July 2019 to know the effect of GA₃ on seedlessness of rambutan. GA₃were used for applying at fruit setting stage. Six concentration of gibberellic acid i,e T_{1 :} 0 ppm (control), T₂ : 50 ppm, T₃ : 100 ppm, T₄ : 150 ppm, T₅ : 200 ppm and T₆ : 250 ppm were used as treatments. Harvested fruit shape was oval, skin colour of fruits was red and surface texture of fruits was hairy and smooth. Pulp and albedo colour was off-white and the texture of pulp was observed soft. Variation was observed with respect to fruit weight, fruit length and breadth, number of fruits per cluster among the treatments. Maximum individual weight of fruit was noted from T₆ (53.60g), whereas the minimum fruit weight was noted in T₁ (45.4g). The largest fruit was observed in T₆ (5.27 x 4.37cm) and the smallest fruit was noted in T₂ (4.93 x 3.93cm). Rind weight varied from 22.77 g to 24.40 g in T₂and T₅respectively. The highest rind thickness was recorded in T₁ (0.32cm) and the lowest rind thickness was observed in T₃ (0.22cm). Pulp weight varied from 21.4g. to 24.0g. which was obtained from the treatments T₁and T₄respectively. Maximum number of fruit / cluster was observed in T₆ (8.33) and minimum number of fruit/cluster was noted in T₁ (3.33). Ten seed weight was also recorded higher in T₆ (28.9g) and lower in T₁ (24.6). Largest seed was found in T₆ (2.47x1.39cm) and the smallest seed was noted in T₂ (2.35x1.20cm). Total soluble solids were recorded maximum in T₆ (16.67) and minimum total soluble solids was recorded in T₃ (15.40). Highest percent of edible portion was noted from T₄ (48.67) and the lowest percent of edible portion was in T₁ (45.09).

Objectives:

To know the effect of GA₃ on seedlessness of rambutan.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the nursery near Horticulture Research Centre, BARI Gazipur during 2018-2019. One eighteen years old asexually propagated rambutan tree was used in the study. Main treatments were varying with six concentrations of gibberellic acid i,e T_{1 :} 0 ppm (control), T₂ : 50 ppm, T₃ : 100 ppm, T₄ : 150 ppm, T₅ : 200 ppm and T₆ : 250 ppm. Gibberellic acid was applied at the time of fruit setting stage. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. A single branch of the tree was used as one replication. Cultural practices like pruning, fertilization and weeding and application of pesticide and fungicide were used in proper time during the the research period. Data on different parameters i.e. individual fruit weight, fruit length, fruit breadth, number of fruit/cluster, rind weight, rind thickness, pulp weight, edible portion, TSS, 10 seed weight, seed length and seed breadth were recorded and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

No expected output was accomplished from the study. It might be due to heavy rainfall after applying the hormone (GA₃). However, GA₃ 250 ppm produced bigger fruits with higher edible portion and maximum number of fruit per cluster which ultimately gave higher yield. The experiment will be continued for final conclusion.
