Socioeconomic Impact of Bagging Technology for Value Addition in Mango in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is called as the king of fruits due to its high deliciousness, exceptional taste and flavor, is a very much popular fruits to the people of Bangladesh. There are several varieties of mango fruits containing deviation taste and flavors. The study was conducted to appraise the postharvest loss during harvesting; Packaging, transportation, marketing activities and to identify the marketing problems and steps to be taken at minimized. The survey was conducted from July/2017 to June/2019 to determine the causes to extend postharvest losses of mango in Bangladesh from cradle to table of the end consumer. A total of 160 respondents were interviewed face to face (questionnaire and field survey) from five districts: Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Shatkhora, Meherpur and Chuadanga. Sixteen problems were identified from farmers’ response. Results obtained from the study area exposed that the problem “Transportation and packaging” was ranked 1st for mango harvesting to marketing.

Objectives:

The present study has been conducted with the following specific objectives: i) to estimate postharvest management and marketing activities by the mango farmers ii) to identify marketing the problems of both at farmers’ and traders’ level and iii) to identify the measures to minimize the marketing constraints.

Methodology:

A. Study Area: Five important mango growing areas, namely Chapainwabgonj, Rajshahi, Meherpur and Chuadanga, Satkhira districts were selected to conduct the present study. Within the districts, Mujibnagar sadar of Meherpur, Sibgonj and Kansart Upazila of Chapainwabgonj, Banassar upazila of Rajshahi, Satkhira Sadar were purposively selected for the study. Two Upazila of each Zila were selected with the help of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) personnel. From the selected upazila, a list of mango growers was prepared. Total 160 of farmers were selected randomly taking 40 farmers from each district. One primary and one secondary market were selected from each growing areas. From these areas, mangoes to the markets of Dhaka, Chittagong, and Khulna, Mymensingh and Sylhet and other areas of the country. Wholesale and retail markets were selected from Dhaka and Gazipur, which were two major consuming areas. A list of intermediaries was prepared from the selected areas. From the list, 40 intermediaries were selected for this study. Out of 40 traders, 15 were Fariar, 15 were Beparies, 10 were Aratdar. B. Sampling Procedure For conducting the survey at household and market level, a complete list of farmers cultivating mango was prepared with the help of DAE personnel. Most of the respondents are 35-40 years old and their education level was from grade VIII to X. At first, a total of 160 mango farmer, wholesaler, bapari, retailer were selected from the list for interview by applying simple random sampling technique to collect primary data. C. Period of Study Primary data were collected by interviewing mango farmers and traders using a structured and pre-tested interview schedule during starting period from June to July 2019. The problem ranking and others information were collected. After collecting data (need assessment questionnaire form) distribution of traders/growers according to the problem regarding mango business (harvesting to marketing) and problem ranking made by the respondents. D. Harvesting and postharvest handling of mango Postharvest loss assessment was carried out using pre-tested questionnaire at the different steps in marketing of fruits. The steps included farmers, Bepari, wholesalers and retailers. Split sets of interview schedules were used for each of the respondents to obtain necessary information in order to assess losses at harvest and subsequent postharvest handling stages. E. Identify mango marketing constraints and remedies at various stages Problem intensity index was calculated using the problem priority degree mentioned by stakeholders. Problem intensity of each problem was also established using the following index as suggested by Rahman et al. (2000). Problem intensity index = P1x 3 + P2x 2 + P3x 1 Where, P1= Percentage of traders mentioning as first priority problem P2= Percentage of traders mentioning as second priority problem P3= Percentage of traders mentioning as third priority problem. F. Identify Mango Marketing channel As perishable produce, mango needs a strong market channel to minimze losses and provide better produce to consumers. To identify mango market channel, a cradle to grave approach was achieved during the survey of the study. Data were analyzed a to identify each stage of mango journey. Stakeholders involved in marketing the mango were surveyed and recorded to futher analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Marketing of mango fruits becomes a profitable venture to most of the intermediaries in the study areas. High price gap was found between the producers and the consumers’ level due to inefficient marketing. It discouraged the growers to produce to grow more in future. Nevertheless, both farmers and growers encountered various problems during marketing of mango fruits.
