Genetic Diversity in Soybean (glycine Max L. Merril)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic diversity among 55 soybean genotypes of diverse geographical origin was studied using Mahalanobis D². The genotypes fell in seven clusters of different sizes. Genetic divergence and geographic distribution were not necessarily related of the ten different characters pods per plant, yield per plant and effective nodes per plant contributed maximum to the total divergence. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between I and V followed by I and VI indication that highly divergent types existed in these clusters. The crosses involving parents belonging to most divergent clusters are expected to manifest maximum heterosis and also wide variability in genetic architecture.

Objectives:

An attempt was made, in the present study, to group 55 genotypes of soybean (Glycine max L. Merril) on the basis of their degree of total genetic divergence as measured by multivariate analysis.

Methodology:

Fifty five genotypes of soybean were grown in a randomized block design with three replications at the central farm of BARl during rabi season 1993-94. Each genotype was grown in 2 rows of 3m length plot with a spacing of 30 cm and 5 cm between roes and plants respectively. Observations were recorded on the ten randomly selected plants from each plot for ten characters, namely days to 50'% flowering (DF), days to maturity (DM), days to pod filling (DPF), plant height in em (PH), primary branches per plant (PB), effective nodes per plant (ENP), pods per plant (PP), 100 seed weight in gm (SW), seed yield per plant in gm (YP) and harvest index (HI). Means of these characters over the replications were used for the statistical analysis. Genetic diversity was studied and generalized distance (D²) was extended. Tocher's method was followed for determining the group constellations. Statistical analysis were carried using IBM computer at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University following Genstat 5 Programme.

Thus, crosses between the genotype of cluster I with that of cluster V and VI, cluster II with that of cluster V, VI and VII, cluster III with that of cluster V and VI and cluster IV with that of cluster V and VI are expected to produce new recombinant with desired traits in soybean.
