Economics of Fish Production Under Semi-intensive Culture and Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An economic analysis of pond fish culture under semi-intensive culture was made in Gazipur sadar, Gaffargaon and Kishoregonj sadar thana based on analysis of pond book records of 375 fish farmers, 125 farmers from each thana. Cobb Douglas production function model was employed to evaluate the effects of 7 explanatory variables on the farm income. Fish production in the surveyed ponds varied from 4260 to 4870 kg/ha/yr with an average of 4556 kg. Average fish production cost, gross income and net return were Tk 86916, 166350 and 79437/ha/yr, respectively. The benefit cost ratio was estimated to be 1.91. Among the production inputs fertilizers, feed and fish seed had significant effects on farm income, while use of pisicide, hiring of professional labor for fish harvesting and payment of pond lease value exerted negative effects on the total farm income. Return to scale exhibited increasing return to pond fish culture under semi-intensive system of culture and management.

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the economics of fish production.

2. To determine the level of profitability and economic viability of the existing pond aquaculture practices.

3. To analyze the structural cost component, production level, benefit- cost ratio of carp poly culture in semi-intensively managed fish ponds in 3 selected districts under MAEP.

Methodology:

The present study was conducted in Gazipur, Gaffargaon and Kishoregonj sadar thana under Gazipur, Mymensingh and Kishoregonj district, respectively. A total of 1500 pond books, 500 from each thana were collected from the MAEP fish farmers. Out of 1500 pond books, 375 pond book records having 125 from each locations were randomly selected and properly examined. Besides checking the pond book records the individual fish farmers was also interviewed by the researchers for confirmation of the data contained in the pond book record. All information collected regarding fish culture operation were converted in hectare term. Econometric techniques including the multiple regression and Cobb-Douglas production model were applied for determining the effects of various production inputs on output. In order to highlight the intensity and use of various production inputs under semi-intensive fish culture and management practices, a detail break-down of the structural cost component is made as back-up information of the Cobb-Douglas production function model. Seven explanatory variables concerning production inputs were hypothesized to explain the pond fish production in the selected areas. The Cobb-Douglas function used for analysis.

Rational and judicious use of production inputs are the most important consideration in obtaining the maximum benefit from pond fish culture operation. The results of the present study indicated that total farm income was greatly reduced due to use of pisicide, professional labor, pond lease value and bank loan interest. The use of the above inputs should be minimized as much as possible. The fish farmers might form fish harvesting groups with their fellow farmers and helped each other in harvesting of fish which would reduce the fish production cost. As pisicide is harmful to pond environment, therefore, the farmers should eradicate predatory fishes either by pond drying or netting. Establishment of fry bank in each unions might offer the fish farmer an opportunity to get quality fish fingerlings at a much lower price which would ultimately increase the profit of the fish farmers.
