Investigation was carried out to observe the effects of oral administration of some anabolic hormones (17 α-methyltestosterone, crude HCG, Sumaach and pituitary gland extract.) on the growth and body composition of Labeo rohita for 75 days. The hormones were administered through a formulated diet at the concentrations of 2.5 mg MT, 15 mg PG extract and 15 mg HCG /kg of dry diet. All hormone- treated fish produced significant (p<0.05) growth over the control. Analysis of proximate composition showed that the hormones promoted significant increase in protein and lipid contents in fish, suggesting that the oral administration of MT, HCG and PG could enhance the growth of L. rohita. Among the three hormones tested, MT showed the best (p<0.05) growth performance.

i) To investigate the growth promoting potential of MT, PG extract and Sumaach and

ii) To study the effects of hormones on the body composition of L. rohita.

The experiment was conducted in the wet laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from October 30, 1995 to January 12, 1996. Twelve fibre glass tanks, each of 70 L capacity, were used for the study. The tanks received a continuous water flow at the rate of 1 L/min. and were aerated regularly. The basal diet was prepared using materials from both plant and animal sources. The hormones were incorporated with the basal diet at a rate of 2.5 mg MT, 15 mg Sumaach and 15 mg PG extract per kg of dry diet representing three treatment groups and were denominated as TI, TII and Tlll, respectively. For the incorporation of MT, 50 mg of MT was dissolved in 50 ml of 95 % ethanol to make a stock solution so that each ml of ethanol contained 1 mg of hormone. Sumaach and PG extract were directly dissolved in distilled water after homogenization. The appropriate amount of hormones as needed for the mentioned doses were mixed with the feed ingredient properly by hand. After mixing thoroughly, the resultant dough were extruded in an electric diet formulator without cooking. The control diet represented fourth treatment and was denominated as TIV. It was also prepared in the same way except the addition of hormone. To eliminate the effect of ethanol, the volume of ethanol used in different treatment groups was kept constant. The juveniles of L. rohita, ranging in weight from 5.54 to 6.69g and in length from 8.38 to 9.05 cm were collected from the Fish Seed Multiplication Farm, Maskanda, Mymensingh. At first, they were maintained in a large circular tank (400 L) in the laboratory for one week and fed once daily with the control diet. The fish were distributed randomly in fiberglass tanks at a rate of 15 fish/tank. The fish were fed two times at a rate of 5% of their body weight during the study. The wastes, feces and leftovers were siphoned out at every morning from the tanks. The water quality parameter of the tanks, such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH and free carbon dioxide (FCD) were recorded fortnightly. All the parameters were determined by analyzing the water sample in the Water Quality and Pond Dynamics Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries. Before releasing the fish into the tanks their individual length and weight were taken. After every two weeks 10 fishes were sampled to measure the growth increment. Fish from each tank were taken randomly by a scoop net and the total length in em and weight in g were recorded. Prior to weighing, fishes were softly blotted with paper towel to remove excess water adhered to their body surface. After every sampling, ration levels were adjusted according to the new mean weight of each group of fish in order to maintain a 5% body weight ration. The growth parameters were determined in terms of length and weight gain, specific growth rate and food conversion ratio. Proximate composition was determined on 9 fish from each treatment (3 from each tank). At the end of the study period fish were dried in a hot air oven. The dried fish were ground by a mortar and used as a sample for analysis of proximate composition. Standard procedures were followed for the estimation of protein, lipid, ash and moisture of feed ingredient, basal diet and fish carcass. Results have been presented as mean±S.E. The treatment differences for fish weight gain, feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, carcass composition and organal morphology were analyzed by using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by a multiple range test (DMRT) when pertinent. Significant differences are reported at a p<0.05. All the data were analyzed by using a computer package 'STAT GRAPHICS' version 7.

The water temperature, DO and FCD were almost identical in all experimental tanks suggesting that the water quality parameters had no major impact on the growth of fish. The growth performance of the fish showed that all hormones promoted the growth in L. rohita. Among the hormones tested, MT gave the best growth, while Sumaach and PG- treated fish showed more or less an identical growth performance. The results obtained in the present study show that each hormone-treated fish had a good growth performance in terms of gain in length and weight, SGR, FCR and daily increment. However, the hormones did not have any effect on the survival of L. rohita. The significantly higher weight gain in Sumaach-treatcd fish over the control appears to be due to better utilization of diet as reflected by their FCR. Moreover growth hormone can increase the rate of protein synthesis in various tissues, whereas it has little effect on protein degeneration. Significantly higher crude fat content in the fish in TI, Tll and TIll over the control might be due to incorporation of steroid in their diets. Higher percentage of crude lipid due to administration of steroid has also been reported in other fishes. The lipid of MT treated fish was significantly higher than that of Sumaach and PG treated fish.
