Effect of Harvesting of Umbel at Different Stages of Ripening on Seed Quality of Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on the effect of harvesting of umbel at different stage of ripening on the quality of onion seed has been conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during 1997-98. The experiment consisted of 6 stages of umbel harvesting viz. at 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% of fruit dehisced. The effect of harvesting of umbel at different stages of ripening was found significant. Maximum amount of seed per umbel (0.93g) was obtained from the 30% dehisced umbel and minimum amount of seed (0.62 g) was obtained from the 0% dehisced umbel. Maximum average weighty of 1000 seeds (3.89 g) was obtained from the 20% dehisced umbel whereas, minimum seed weight (2.9'8 g) from 50% dehisced umbels. The highest germination percentage (73.33%) was obtained from the seeds of 20% dehisced umbels while, the lowest germination percentage was recorded (20%) from the 0% dehisced umbels.

Objectives:

To find out the proper stage of umbel for harvesting to get high yield and good quality seed.

Methodology:

The single factor experiment was conducted in Randomised Complete Block Design with three replications. Dry sets of onion about 10-12 g (usual size grade for seed production) of local cv. Taherpur was planted on 01 November. Six levels of fruit dehisced as treatment viz. 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 per cent. The unit plot size was 1 m x l m. The distance between block-to-block was 50 cm and plot-to-plot was 30 cm. According to HRDP (1995) manure and fertilizers were applied in the experimental plots and thereafter irrigation was done properly as and when necessary followed by mulching to break the soil crust. Preventive measures were taken to keep the crop free from Alternaria disease by providing periodical (10 days interval) spraying with fungicide Ridomil @ 0.25%. Harvesting of umbels were done according to the treatments at different dales when they attained harvestable colour of umbel by eye estimations. In each treatment, 10 umbels were harvested from 10 separate plants in the morning to prevent shattering of seed. The umbels were cut with approximately 15 cm of scape attached. Onion seed umbels were dried and threshed by beating the umbel with soft and small stick. Seeds were cleaned by winnowing and dried by spreading in the open sun light on brown paper until they reached safe moisture content (6-9%). Germination test was conducted at room temperature immediately after drying of seeds. For each treatment 100 seeds were taken for each replication. It was performed on paper soaked in sterile petridish (90 mm diameter). In each petridish, 100 seeds were placed on three-filter paper saturated with distilled water, which was used as substratum. Data were recorded on average seed weight per umbel, average 1000 seed weight and percentage of seed germination.

Average weight of seeds per umbel was significantly influenced at different stages of ripening. Maximum amount of seed (0.93 g) was obtained from the 30% dehisced umbel at stage of harvested, which was followed by the 40% and 50% dehiscent umbels as 0.87 and 0.86 g, respectively. However, minimum amount of seed (0.62 g) was produced from the 0% dehisced umbel. Average 1000 seed weight was significantly influenced at different stage of ripening of umbel. Maximum average amount of 1000 seeds (3.89 g) was obtained from the 20% dehisced umbels which was followed by 10% (3.43 g) and 30% (3.50 g) dehisced umbels. Whereas, minimum average weight of 1000 seeds (2.98 g) was produced by 50% dehisced umbels. The germination percentage of seeds varied significantly due to different stage of ripening of umbel. The highest germination percentage (73.33%) was obtained from the seeds of 20% dehisced umbels. The lowest germination percentage was recorded (20%) from the 0% dehisced umbels.
