Effect of Different Levels of Magnesium on Yield and Seed Quality of Three Rice Varieties.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, during the period from January to August 2010 to find out the effect of different levels of magnesium (Mg) e.g. 0, 30, 40 and 50 kg hato see the yield and quality of three rice varieties and to assess the optimum doses of Mg. Different levels of Mg application significantly influenced the seed and straw yield of rice. Moreover, the interaction effect of Mg and variety was also significant. Medium dose (40 kg MgSOha) of Mg significantly increased grain and straw yield but it did not influence seed quality components such as germination, vigor, purity etc. The grain, straw and biological yield was low in control plots without application of Mg fertilizer. The application of Mg was essential for increasing the yield of used rice varieties.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of magnesium on the yield and seed quality of three rice varieties and to assess the optimum doses of magnesium for having maximum yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. The land having Non Calcareous Dark Gray Flood plain soil under the Sonatola soli series of Old Brahmaputra Flood plain in Agro Ecological Zone (AEZ-9) during the period from January to August, 2010. There were two factors in the experiment viz., variety and doses of magnesium. Variety were three (viz., BINA dhan 5,BRRI dhan 29 and BINA dhan 7) and doses of magnesium were four treatments (viz., 0, 30, 40, 50) kg ha^-1. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3.0m × 2.0m. The data were analyzed through a statistical computer program MSTAT-C.

Achievement/Findings:

It is shown from result that variety had significant influence on all the parameters studied except panicle length. BRRI dhan 29 produced the highest no. of effective tillers hill^-1 (14.05), lowest no. of non-effective tillers hill^-1 (3.85), medium no. of filled grains panicle^-1 (190.2) and highest weight of 1000 seed (23.0 g) and as a result highest seed yield (6.34 t ha^-1), highest straw yield (8.32 t ha^-1), highest biological yield (14.67 t ha^-1) and highest harvest index (43.55%) was obtained than other varieties. BINA- 7 produced the lowest plant height (88.70 cm), highest no. of non-effective tillers hill^-1(4.63), lowest no. of filled grain panicle^-1 (133.6) and lowest weight of 1000 seed (19.98 g), so BINA- 7 produced the lowest seed yield (4.03 t ha^-1), straw yield (5.79 t ha^-1), biological yield (9.80 t ha^-1) and harvest index (40.84%). The interaction effect of variety and magnesium level was significant on several parameters except plant height, total tillers hill^-1, non-effective tillers hill^-1 and panicle length. The effect of interaction of variety and magnesium level showed significant influence on straw yield. Germination percentage, vigor index and purity percentage did not vary significantly due to varieties, magnesium level and interaction of variety and magnesium level As Mg is the central atom of the chlorophyll molecule, it generally helps in increasing yield and nutrition value of rice but not on seed quality related characters.
