Prevalence of Helminth Infestation of Goats in Relation to Season, Host, Sex, Age and Breed in Chittagong District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objectives: The prevalence of helminth infestation of goats in the present study relative to season, host sex, age and breed in Chittagong district were determined. Materials and Methods: An investigation was carried out at Chittagong district from January, 1 to December, 31, 2012. During this study, 1600 goat faecal samples were examined by direct smear and floatation methods to identify the positive samples. The data was loaded and stored into the excel spread sheet. The information was compiled and the report was prepared using SPSS. Results: The overall prevalence of different helminths in goats were Fasciola sp. (2.62%), Paramphistomum sp. (2.00%), Moniezia sp. (2.31%), Bunostomum sp. (4.62%), Strongyloides sp. (6.93%), Oesophagostomum sp.(4.31%), Haemonchus sp. (5.87%). Age wise prevalence in goats at 0-12 months, 13-24 months and above 24 months ages were 11.41%, 28.59%, 71.88% respectively. Age was noticeable as risk factor where older goats (> 24 month) were more infested by helminths than younger ones (< 24 month). Helminth infestation was higher during rainy season (36.22%) and moderate in summer (24.15%) and winter (23.91%). Female goats (34.50%) were more susceptible than the male goats (22.87%). Breed wise prevalence reported 20.68%, 52.18% and 30.44% in Jamunapari cross, Black Bengal and non-discript breed respectively. Conclusion: Host sex, age and season were highly relative with the occurrence of helminths infestation.

Objectives:

To study the prevalence of helminth parasites of goat relative with age, host sex, breed and season in Chittagong district.

Methodology:

Study area and geographic information: Chittagong has a total area of 168.07 square kilometres (64.89 sq mi). The city is known for its vast hilly terrain that stretches throughout the entire district and eventually into India. The city is located at 22°22′0″N 91°48′0″E on the banks of the River. Sample collection procedure: The study was conceded out for one year from January 2012 to December 2012 on 1600 goat’s data from the SA Quaderi Teaching Veterinary Hospital and Upazila veterinary hospital, patiya and sadar.To attain the objectives, registered goats were grouped according to the age, sex and breed. Sex of the goats were divided into 2 groups; Male (N=800) and Female (N=800) goats. Goats were categorized into 3 age groups as < 12months (N=780), 13-24 months (N=507) and > 24 months of age (N=313).Other hand based on breed characteristics goats were grouped into Black Bengal (N=274), Jamunapari cross (N=899) and Non-descript breed (N=427).To conclude prevalence of helminths parasitic infestation of goat, the season was divided into 3 groups such as summer, rainy and winter season. Parasitological procedure for egg detection: Around 3-5 g of fresh feacal sample were collected randomly from the rectum for each individual with aseptic condition (using hand gloves) and carried on ice, sent to the laboratory and stored at 4oC for a maximum of 24 hours for further coprological examination. Each vial was marked with the distinctive identification number by marker pen. Register sheet was used to keep record for every goat. Both the direct smear and floatation methods (Soulsby, 1986) were performed to identify the positive samples. McMaster counting technique (Soulsby, 1986 & Tibor, 1999) was also carried out to determine the parasitic eggs load (epg). During study both healthy and sick animal’s faece was examined.The parasitic eggs were identified by using low power microscope according to the keys and morphological characteristics (Waruiru, et al., 2003). Statistical analysis: The data was loaded and stored into the excel spread sheet. The information was compiled and the report was prepared using SPSS v.12 for Windows (SPSS, Inc.,Chicago, IL, USA).

Achievement/Findings:

Season, host sex, age and breed were highly relative with the occurrence of helminths infestation. The prevalence of helminths infestation was moderate all the year round but highest prevalence was observed during the rainy season. Black Bengal goat is very much susceptible than that of other breed. Female goats were more exposed than that of male goat. So, to control helminths infestation regular deworming program and treatment of the infected animal is essential.
