Effect of Integrated Use of Acacia Leaves with Urea on the Growth and Yield of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during aman season of 2008 to study the effect of integrated use of acacia leaves with urea in rice cultivation .Urea was used as inorganic source and acacia leaves were applied as organic source of nitrogen. The experiment was set up in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The grain and straw yields as well as the yield contributing characters like plant height, panicle length and number of grains panicle-1 were significantly influenced by various treatments. Grain and straw yields were increased by the different treatments ranging from 20.28 to 59.18% and 18.88 to 41.53%, respectively over the control treatment. The N contents and uptake in rice were significantly increased due to different treatments. Among the treatments integrated use of 80% Recommended Dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha-1 from urea + 20% Recommended Dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha-1 from acacia leaves had a better performance on grain and straw yield, N contents and uptakes.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of integrated use of acacia leaves with urea on the growth and yield of BRRI dhan 41 rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out during the aman season from August to December of 2008 at the soil science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with three replications. There were seven treatments as follows: T₁ : Control (No fertilizer); T₂ : Recommended Fertilizer Dose (RFD); T₃ : 80% Recommended dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha^-1 from urea + 20% Recommended dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha^-1 from acacia leaves; T₄ : 60% Recommended dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha^-1 from urea + 40% Recommended dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha^-1 from acacia leaves; T5 : 40% Recommended dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha-1 from urea + 60% Recommended dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha^-1 from acacia leaves; T₆ : 20% Recommended dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha^-1 from urea + 80% Recommended dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha^-1 from acacia leaves. The total number of plots was 7x3=21, each plot measuring 4mx2.5m. Rice var. BRRI dhan 41 was used as test crop. The soil was silt loam. The leaf litters of acacia were incorporated in the plots as per treatments a week before transplantation and the litters were mixed thoroughly with the soil. The N, P and K content (%) of the leaf litters of acacia were 2.9, 0.05 and 1.55 respectively. Recommended nitrogen @ 80kg ha^-1 from urea was applied in three equal split as per treatment. The first dose of urea was applied at 15 days after transplanting. The remaining doses of urea were top dressed at 37 (active tillering stage) and 60 (panicle initiation stage) days after transplanting. P, K, S and Zn were applied @ 15, 50, 12 and 2 kgha^-1 from triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MoP), gypsum and zinc oxide, respectively in all the plots except control as basal dose. The seedlings of 35 day old were transplanted in the plots on 18 August 2008. The intercultural operations were done as and when required. The crop was harvested at maturity on 18 December 2008 and the yield and yield contributing parameters were recorded. Analysis of variance for the characters under study was performed by ‘F’ variance test and mean separation was done by DMRT (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). T₇ : 100% Recommended dose of Nitrogen (RDN) ha^-1 from acacia leaves. The total number of plots was 7x3=21, each plot measuring 4mx2.5m. Rice var. BRRI dhan 41 was used as test crop.
