Performance of Chashi-iii Wheat Thresher

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Chasih-III thresher was tested and evaluated for threshing wheat crop. The thresher consists of 495 mm diameter rasp-bar type threshing drum, blower, and clearing arrangement. The machine performance in terms of grain output was compared with that of traditional hand and animal threshing method. The cost of mechanical wheat threshing was Tk. 363.32 per ton which was 15% higher and 29% lower than that of hand threshing and animal treading, respectively. The working capacity of this machine was 672 kg per hour at 1050 rpm of the threshing drum. The average power consumption was 8.36 kW with an equivalent amount of energy 12.37 kWh/ton. Five labourers are required to operate the machine efficiently. The threshing and cleaning efficiency of the machine were 97.87% and 99.5%, respectively. The minimum annual use for the thresher is about 10 tons while an amount of more than 30 tons of wheat is to be threshed for economic operation.

Objectives:

The main of objectives of this research was to evaluate the efficiency and suitability of the thresher in terms of : a) output capacity of the machine; b) quality of operation (clogging, ease of operation, ease of adjustment, cleaning, spare replacement and safety) ; c) power requirement and d) operating cost of the machine.

Methodology:

The performance test of Chashi-III was conducted at BARI threshing floor. The testing was carried out at a rpm of 1080 of the drum. Each test was conducted for half an hour and replicated thrice. The thresher was operated by 11 kW electric motor. A clamp meter was used to measure current and voltage. The speeds of threshing drum and blower were measured using an electronic as well as a mechanical tachometers. The air flow rate was measured using anemometer. During each test, the appropriate volume of samples of threshed wheat were collected three times at an equal interval at the main grain outlet, and chaff straw outlet. The time for collection of samples of threshed wheat were recorded accurately. Sample grains from main outlet and immature grain outlets were collected and measured. For the analysis of samples and sampling time, RNAM test codes were followed to calculate the feed rate, threshing recovery, threshing efficiency, cleaning efficiency of main grain outlet, quantity of damaged grains and loss of grains. The thresher operation was smooth. The operation and maintenance was very simple. The concave clearance was 8 mm which could be adjusted easily using lever arrangement aside the threshing drum. The fan belt was adjustable one. All sieves were fitted horizontally about 10 degrees. The speed of the motor was 1500 rpm. The speed of the threshing drum at no-load condition was 1080 rpm but at load condition, it was 1050 rpm, about 3% reduction in speed was observed. The peripheral speed of the drum was 27 m/s which is optimum. The speed of fan blower was 820 rpm which was found to be suitable. A hitch system was added to allow the movement/transport of the thresher by animal draft power and tractor.

Achievement/Findings:

The overall performance of the thresher was satisfactory. The moisture content of the crop was about 14% (w.b) which was found to be the best for wheat threshing. Concave clearance of 8 mm at front side and 4 mm at rear side was found to be the best for the Aghrani variety of wheat. The weight of the thresher was 700 kg. Hence it was difficult to move the machine using a pair of draft animal.
