Performance Evaluation of Chinese Power Tiller in Gazipur Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A Chinese power tiller was evaluated both in laboratory and field conditions. The performance of the tiller engine in the laboratory Was satisfactory. The specific fuel consumption at rated speed was 199.5 grn/bhp-hr. The engine could take 10% over load. The 100 hrs endurance test was also satisfactory. The field capacities of tiller were 0.151 to 0.173 ha/hr and 0.196 to 0.221 ha/hr when cultivating in dry and wet land conditions, respectively. The field efficiencies of tiller were 72.18% to 84.93% and 86.91% to 91.86% when cultivating in dry and wet land conditions, respectively. The scope of future work was also suggested.

Objectives:

To evaluate the Chinese power tiller with respect to the following criteria:

1. Performance of engine (power unit): a. load test, b. endurance test.

2. Field performance : a. dry land (Field capacity and field efficiency) , b. wet land (Field capacity and field efficiency)

Methodology:

One Chinese power tiller equipped with rotary tiller was selected. The specifications of the power tiller tested is presented: Performance test includes I. Engine performance test, 2. Hundred hours engine endurance test, 3. Field test. The engine performance test was conducted at the heat engine laboratory of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). In the laboratory test, the engine was run at 2000 rpm, dynamometer load increased from 6.10 to 13.32 kg in eight steps and corresponding fuel consumptions and time were noted to establish a relation between Brake specific fuel consumption (Bsfc) versus brake horse power (Bhp). A hydraulic type dynamometer was used to apply load (kg) to determine horse power required. The Bhp and Bsfc were calculated using the following relationship. Dynamometer hp = (W x N)/2000; Where W = Dynamometer load (kg), N = Shaft revolution (rpm), Bsfc = .gr) / t. Bhp, Where V = amount of fuel collected (c.c.). t= Time of collection (min), Sp.gr. = 0.836. Engine Brand name : Dong Feng, Dodel : S195N, Engine no. : 22178, Engine weight: 150kg, Rated output: 12hp, Rated rpm: 2000, Cooling system: Water cooled. The power tiller was tested both in dry and wet land conditions. The tests were carried out in five selected fields. The area of each plot was 0.2 ha and the plot shape was rectangle with the sides in the ratio of 2: 1. In dry land operation, upto 3 passes were considered and up to 3 passes were also considered for wet land operation. The test was replicated thrice for each pass. Data on working width, depth, speed, field capacity, field efficiency and corresponding fuel consumption were noted as per RNAM test code.

Achievement/Findings:

1. The performance of the engine is satisfactory. The engine could take 10% over load. The Bsfc at rated power (12 hp B. S.) is 199.5 gm/bhp^-hr, 2. The engine endurance test is satisfactory and nothing unusual was observed during 100 hrs test. 3. The overall performance of the power tiller is satisfactory.
