A total of 72 forty weeks old lending ducks having history of floor laying were placed on either Rice husk tRH) or Sawdust (SD) floor litters. They were given choice to lay eggs either on top or bottom tier io lay on either RH. SO. Chopped Rice Siruw (CRS) or Sand (SA) as nesting m «nal for p»w »r 6o ‹i«,i. n• lapse was to observe whether floor laying is corrected by the provisioned floor litter. next tier Ann nesting material. The choice o£ laying site as influenced by those provisions was also examined. Provision of floor litter. nest and nesting material increased proportion of eggs laid in the nest and within 20 days of the experimental period. Floor laying was totally corrected and persisted up to the end of the experiment. Egg weight, rare of lay and live weight did not vary fP>0.05) between floor litters. Slightly heavier eggs were laid in bottom tier than that in top tier. More eggs were laid in the bottom tier than that in top tier. Proportionately, more eggs were laid or RH and CRS than that on SD and SA nesting materials. Significantly more time was spent to lay eggs on 5A nesting materials, but time spending did not vary (P>0.05) among RH, CRS and SD nesting materials. New ducks had tendency to accumulate their eggs to sit on. Placing previous eggs in the ness encouraged io icy in nest. It was concluded that provision of the proper liner. ness end nesting materials might totally correct floor laying in ducks, RH snd CRS seemed to be best, SO intermediate and SA in worst nesting materials. Placing two-storied nests may satisfy, the need of ducks of varying live weight to lay in nest.

To see whether floor laying can be corrected by the provision of proper Floor litter, nest and nesting materials.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) poultry farm, Mymensingh to study whether floor laying of ducks can be corrected by the provision of floor litter, nests and nesting material. The ducks were previously reared under a semi-scavenging system and therefore egg production was obviously lower. The experiment was conducted over c period nt two months. A group of ducks having history of floor laying were used in this study. A total of 72 lending ducks aged 40 weeks of age habituated to lay on floor were synchronized (for correction) to lay in nest by confining them in pens. Floors of the pen were covered with either Rice Husk or Saw Dust litter material. The ducks were randomly distributed in 4 pens in a group of 18 ducks in each. each group was housed either on rice husk or on saw dust-littered floor. Thus each floor litter treatment had 2 replications. A two snorted community nests having 4 nest box units in each tier were placed in each pen. Thus nest box placed in each pen had 8 nest box units. A specially made wooden test box was used in this study. The top tier had an extended balcony of l5cni width and had also two ladders attached to the tow end of balcony placing at 45° angle from the ground. The depth of floor litter materials in all pens was 8cm arid the depth of nesting materials was 5.08 cm. Floor space for each duck was 3493cm2 and 18 ducks were placed in each pen.  Alt ducks were exposed to a continuous photoperiod of 16 hours (natural plus artificial light). Two hundred watts bulbs used for provided artificial light at night. All birds, throughout the experimental period, were fed on a layer diet containing calculated 18% crude protein (CP), 2800 (Kca1/kg) Metabolizable energy (ME), 3% Calcium (Ca), 0.98a Phosphorus (P), I.2& Lysine (Lys), 0.51& Methionine (Meth) and 0.29H% Tryptophgn (Tryp).  Initially, ducks were reluctant to go inside the nest boxes and therefore, marked eggs were placed in each nest bar unit for differentiating them from newly laid eggs to encourage ducks to lay in nest. Total egg production, egg laid on floor in each pen, egg weight in different nests in different tiers end on different nesting materials in each pen and feed consumption in each pen were recorded. T-test was performed to compare the data between two floor littered. Data on egg laid and egg weight in different littered Coor pens were for a 2 (Floor littered) x 2 (Nest tier) x 4 (nesting material) factorial experiment in CRD. Analysis of variance was performed and variance was partitioned into floor litter (FL), tier (T), nesting material (NM), FL x T, FL x NM, T x NM, FL, x T x NM and error to compare data among treatments. Significant differences were identified by calculating least significant differences (LSD).

Regardless of floor litter, provision of nest and nesting material started correcting floor laying to nest laying from the beginning of the experiment. Thus, floor laying was reduced from the beginning of the experiment and within 30 days floor laying came down to nil and persisted up to the end of the experimental period. Rate of egg production was slightly higher (P<0.05) in Rice husk (RH) littered fioor pen than that in Sawdust (SD) littered hoor pen. The results simply that response ducks to provision fo flitter nest and nesting material may be different from hens. Moreover, choice of nest with respect to bitterness and nesting material in duck may also be slightly different from that on hen.
