The study was conducted at two upazilas namely Kamarkhanda and Belkuchi upazila under Sirajganj district of Bangladesh during 2007. This paper presents an overview of species choice and status of social forestry activities in the area. The study revealed that people are engaged in social forestry activities with the assistance of government and non-government organizations and participants get benefits from the program. Random sampling was conducted for the study. Among the two upazilas 53 respondents were selected randomly and interviewed by the semi structured questionnaire. The whole road network was not planted at Kamarkhanda and Belkuchi upazila. Out of 235.5 km roads in the study area, 111.0 km roads were taken for plantation. The plantations, which were carried out on roadside and on embankment, are performing well. It was also found that, the beneficiaries of roadside plantation are increasing day by day. The implementing organizations are also taking steps to increase the number of participants. The target people are more or less conscious about species selection for planting trees. Multipurpose and fast growing trees like mahagoni, sissoo, babla, etc. are given priority in selection of species. These species have better performance than other species. At the time of rotation when the plantation is harvested and sold, the status of revenues earned from the program is satisfactory for the participants. The farm income of majority of the respondents of the study area have increased through generating cash from the social forestry plantations i.e., timber, fuelwood, fruit, food, etc. The results of the study also reveals that people’s participation in this program is very effective and fruitful but some problems created due to the program implementation i.e., encroachment, inadequacy of GOs and NGOs staff and lack of communication with participants are the major. If these constraints can be addressed properly, the program can fulfill its stipulated objectives.

The objectives of the study are to find out the species selection by the local people and implementing authorities on various forestry programs in the study area, to compare the status and performance of different species among the social forestry programs and to reveal the potential species according to the opinions of local people and implementing organizations.

The study was conducted at two Upazilas namely Kamarkhanda and Belkuchi in Sirajganj district of Bangladesh during 2007. Random sampling was conducted for the study. Among the two Upazilas 53 respondents were selected randomly and interviewed by the semi structured questionnaire. Data were collected on species choice by the local people and the implementing authorities, criteria for their species choice, best performance species and so on. Primary data and information have also been collected from informal discussions with farmers and villagers associated with the forestry programs as well as formal and informal discussions with GOs and NGOs working in this time. Secondary data was collected from government and non-government organizations, published and unpublished reports, books, journals and other relevant documents. The surveyed data were analyzed by using SPSS statistical package software.

Tree plantation along roadside and other marginal land is one of the important social forestry program in our Country. Under roadside plantation programs various types of organizations i.e., Government and NonGovernment Organizations have been planted different types of species. It requires a lot of fund for plantation on roadside. Upazila Parishad planted trees with the fund accrued from various national and international projects such as IFADEP (Integrated Food Assisted Development Program), RIDP (Rural Infrastructure Development Project), RDP-18 (Rural Development Project-18) and IFFD (Integrated Food For Development). Tree plantation was carried out with the participation of local people. The local people also get benefits from the plantation. The non-participant groups do not get any tangible benefits from the plantation, but sometimes they are harmful for the plantation because they damage planted seedlings by illegal felling, grazing etc. With the active participation of local people such plantation program can be more successful. The Forest Department and related organizations have been tried to increase the participant groups. In the study area, the total number of beneficiaries per kilometer is sufficient. Forest Department, LGED and other organizations could take an initiative to increase beneficiaries by planting more area. At Kamarkhanda upazila roadside plantation has not been initiated in most of the roads and other marginal lands for the lake of proper knowledge about tree plantation. For this purpose, the authority would trains the local people about planting techniques and how to take care of plantation. They should also try to make the people understand about the benefits of tree plantation.
