Validation Trial of Tissue Cultured Plantlets of BARI Malta-1 (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tissue cultured and grafted saplings of BARI malta-1 have been planted to see the field performance at ARS, Raikhaliand ARS,Ramgarh. Both tissue cultured and grafted plants of BARI malta-1 produced fruits this year. Maximum no. of fruits/plant (193.7) was found in grafted plant followed by tissue cultured plant (41.3) in HARS,Raikhali. Maximum plant height (280 cm), no. of brunches (23.7) and base girth (46 cm) was found in the grafted plant. Tissue cultured plants produced 215 cm plant height along with 28.3 cm base girth and 21.3 branches. Vigorous growth and development has been found in grafted plants compare to tissue-cultured ones during this year ( Tissue culture: N-S = 263.3 cm, E-W = 250 cm; grafted: N-S = 316.6 cm, E-W = 343.3 cm). In the case of HARS, Ramgarh, maximum plant height (270 cm), no. of brunches (2.56) and base girth (18.53 cm) was found in tissue cultured plants. The highest plant canopy N-S= 265 and E-W= 248 cm was found in tissue culture plants where grafted plants have N-S= 148 cm and E-W= 178 cm (Table 2).

Objectives:

The experiment was undertaken to evaluate the growth and fruit performance of malta plantlets raised from the nucellar seedling.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out at ARS, Raikhali and ARS, Ramgarhduring August 2011.The grafted saplings of BARI Malta-1 and tissue cultured plantlets were planted in maintaining a distance of 4 m × 4 m. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 15 kg cowdung, 150 gm K₂O, 230 gm P₂O₅ and 1 kg dolomite per pit were applied before transplanting. This year 15 kg cowdung, 140 gm N, 70 gm P₂O₅, 120 gm K₂Owere applied per tree in two equal installments. The first installment was applied during February and the last during October. Data on growth parameters were taken as necessary during the 2016-17 fruiting season.

Achievement/Findings:

The performance results of grafted and tissue cultured plants of BARI malta-1 in the hilly areas during 2016-17 are recorded. Average plant height (280 cm), base girth (46 cm), number of branch/plant (23.7), the height of main trunk (48.7 cm), canopy (316.6 cm x 343.3 cm) and fruits per plant (193.7) were higher in the grafted plant. On the other hand average plant height (215 cm), base girth (28.3 cm), number of branch/plant (21.3), the height of main trunk (39 cm), canopy (263.3 cm x 250 cm) and fruits per plant (41.3) were recorded in tissue-cultured malta. Last year (2016) tissue cultured malta gave fruits for the first time but only flowering occurred during 2015. The tissue-cultured malta plant has produced thorns on its whole body but it is totally absent in grafted malta. The tissue-cultured malta plant did not produce a ring at the bottom side of the fruits like BARI Malta-1. The performance of grafted and tissue cultured plants of BARI Malta 1 in ARS, Average plant height (234cm), base girth (17.54 cm), number of branch/plant (2.25), canopy (148 cm x178cm) and fruits per plant (43.25 nos.) were recorded in the grafted plant. On the other hand average plant height (270 cm), base girth (18.53 cm), number of branch/plant (2.56), canopy (148 cmx174 cm) and fruits per plant (52.36 nos.) were recorded in tissue-cultured malta. The tissue-cultured malta plant has produced thorns on its whole body but it is totally absent in grafted malta. The tissue-cultured malta plant did not produce a ring at the bottom side of the fruits like BARI Malta-1. Tissue cultured plants need to mature enough for their better performance. The experiment will be continued next few years.
