Validation Trial of Tissue Cultured Plantlets of Jackfruit Germplasm (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tissue cultured and grafted saplings of jackfruit germplasm have been planted to see the field performance at ARS, Ramgarh, RARS, Akbarpurand RARS, Hathazari. Both tissue cultured and grafted plants of jackfruit germplasm produced fruits this year in ARS, Ramgarh. Average fruits per plant in tissue-cultured jackfruit was 4 on the other hand 12 for the grafted jackfruit in ARS, Ramgarh. In the case of RARS, Akbarpur Plant height was ranged from 560.0 cm to 573.0 cm. Again base girth was 60.0 cm to 70.0 cm. The number of branches were highest (5.0) in Acc. no.02 and lowest (02) in Acc. no.03. The height of the main trunk varies from 75.0 cm to 115.0 cm. Plant canopy at north-south was 550.0 cm to 570.0 cm and at east-west was 560.0cm to 670.0 cm. 1st flower initiation was observed on 20th January 2017 and it has beared 02 fruits. All the plants are in excellent growing condition inRARS, Akbarpur . In RARS, Hathazari, plant height was ranged from 3.1 m to 7.8 m. Again base girth was 25.0 cm to 80.0 cm. The number of branches was highest (18.0) in Acc. no.05 and lowest (02) in Acc. no.11. The height of the main trunk varies from 0.9 m to 4.7m. Plant canopy at north-south was 2.5 m to 6.9 m and at east-west was 2.6 m to 7 m. All the tissue cultured plants are in excellent growing condition.

Objectives:

The present experiment was undertaken to evaluate the tissue cultured jackfruit at ARS, Ramgarh; RARS, Akbarpur and RARS, Hathazari.

Methodology:

The experiment has been conducted at ARS, Ramgarh, RARS, Akbarpur and RARS, Hathazari from 2013. Tissue cultured plantlets were produced and supplied from Biotechnology Division of BARI in 2013. Plant spacing was 6x6 m. The individual plant was fertilized with cowdung (20 kg), urea (500 g), TSP (500 g), MP (500 g) and gypsum (250g) in two equal installments, one at the onset and the other at the end of the rainy season. This year 30 kg cowdung, 184 gm N, 100 gm P₂O₅, 150 gm K₂O were applied per tree in two equal installments. First installment was applied during April and the last during October. Weeding, irrigation and other management practices were done as and when needed. Data on growth parameters were taken as per necessary during the 2016-17 fruiting season.

Achievement/Findings:

The performance of grafted and tissue cultured Jackfruit plants at ARS, Ramgarh during 2016-17 are recorded. Average plant height (5.20 m), base girth (36.50 cm), number of branch/plant (2.6), canopy (3.2 m x 3.8 m) and fruits per plant (12) were higher in the grafted plant. On the other hand average plant height (6.53 m), base girth (41.3 cm), number of branch/plant (3), canopy (4.7 m x 4.18 m) and fruits per plant (4) were recorded in tissue-cultured Jackfruit. The performance of tissue cultured Jackfruit plants at RARS, Akbarpurduring 2016-17 are Recorded. Plant height was ranged from 560.0 cm to 573.0 cm. Again base girth was 60.0 cm to 70.0 cm. The number of branches was highest (5.0) in Acc. no.02 and lowest (02) in Acc. no.03. The height of the main trunk varies from 75.0 cm to 115.0 cm. Plant canopy at north-south was 550.0 cm to 570.0 cm and at east-west was 560.0cm to 670.0 cm. Only Acc. 02 in reproductive stage and 1st flowering was found on 20^th January 2017 and it has only 02 fruits in the current season which are still immature to harvest. All the plants are in excellent growing condition. The performance of tissue cultured Jackfruit plants at RARS, Hathazari during 2016-17 are recorded. Plant height was ranged from 3.1 m to 7.8m. Again base girth was 25 cm to 80 cm. The number of branches was highest (18) in Acc. no.05 and lowest (02) in Acc. no. 11. The height of the main trunk varies from 0.9 m to 4.7 m. Plant canopy at north-south was 2.5 m to 6.9 m and at east-west was 2.6 m to 7 m. Among the 16 plants, 6 plants are in the reproductive stage. Acc no. 4 and 7 have 2 fruits and Acc. no. 3, 6, 8 and 15 bears only one fruit in the current season which is still immature to harvest. All the plants are in excellent growing condition. All the plants of the tissue-cultured jackfruit are in satisfactory growth condition in all stations.
