Generation Advancement of Bt Brinjal Lines (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial on generation advancement of two Bt brinjal lines (Bt Chega and Bt Islampuri) was conducted at the confined field of Biotechnology Research Field, BARI Gazipur during 2016-17. Considering the distinctiveness, uniformity and stability of the lines, Bt Chega may be proposed to release as GE crop and Bt Islampuri may be discarded.

Objectives:

Breeder must ensure that a level of uniformity and stability exists throughout multiplication and commercialization. After the required backcrosses, selfing and multilocation trials, the programme on generation advancement of the rest of the lines was conducted at the confined field of the Biotechnology Division

Methodology:

Seedlings of BC₄F₈of Bt Brinjal lines (Bt Chega and Bt Islampuri) were grown at the contained greenhouse of the Biotechnology Division. The 40-45-days old seedlings were transplanted at the confined field on November 27, 2016. The unit plot size was 48 m² and it was replicated thrice. The spacing was 1m x 1m. To ensure genetic purity, the Bt plants were covered by the fine mosquito net before the flowering stage. Strip test was done at the vegetative stage due to the unavailability of strips before planting. Hundred percent of plants of Bt Chega showed positive results towards to Bt strip test where Bt Islampuri showed about two-third. Frequent visits were made by the scientists. At the fruiting stage, off-types were discarded. Other intercultural operations such as weeding, mulching, fertilizer application, irrigation, sticking etc. were done as and when necessary. Bionim plus and Kinalux (to control sucking pests) and Vertimec (to control mites) were also applied as and when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

There was no incidence BFSB in the two brinjal lines field. Distinctiveness, uniformity, stability and homozygosity etc. were considered for the generation advancement. Bt Chega: The plants were found as intermediate growth habit, light green stem colour, solitary bearing habit, oval fruit shape. Standard fruit shape, size and colour were found in Bt Chega. Bt Islampuri: The plants were found as intermediate growth habit, dark green stem colour, solitary bearing habit, large fruit shape. The colour of the fruit was not found up to the mark. Moreover, there were very few numbers of fruits (one or two) and even no fruits were found in a plant.

Brinjal cultivar ‘Chega’ is very much popular among the farmers of greater Jessore. Considering the field performance, Bt Chega may be proposed as a new genetically engineered variety. The performance of Bt Islampuri was not up to the mark. It should not be wise to proceed on Bt Islampuri rather than discarded.
