Performance of Advanced Grasspea Genotypes/lines in Saline Soil (2018--2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Grasspea is probably the most drought-tolerant legume crop and it is also resistant to moderate salinity. An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during rabi season of 2018-2019 to evaluate the performance of different genotypes/lines under saline soil. There were 3 genotypes of grasspea (SEL-1348 , BKX-002-4 and Serajgonj local (E₃) where BARI khesari-3 was used as check variety. The highest seed yield (1.30 t/ha) was recorded in Serajganj local which was significantly higher than the rest of the varieties/lines. A similar trend was observed in case of straw yield (4.31 t/ha). BKX-0002-4 was the shortest durational one among the studied genotypes. The lowest level (5.25 dS/m) of soil salinity was recorded at the sowing time in BARI Khesari-3 and the highest level of salinity (10.35 dS/m) was recorded in the harvesting stage at SEL-1348.

Objectives:

The objective of this experiment was undertaken to evaluate genotypes of grasspea for their salt tolerance in the early stage of their growth.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2018-2019 to evaluate the performance of different genotypes/lines under saline soil. The soil belonged to the AEZ-11 and AEZ-13. The land topography was medium-high. The soil of the experimental field is clay loam in texture. There were 3 genotypes of grasspea (SEL-1348 (E₁), BKX-002-4 (E₂) and Serajgonj local (E₃) where BARI khesari-3 was used as check variety. The unit plot size was 3m X 3m. Seeds were sown in the field on 28 November 2018. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. At every 15 days interval soil and water salinities (dS/m) were measured by EC meter (HANNA: HI 9835). Data on yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C program. Recommended doses of 20-20-20 NPK in the form of urea, TSP, MoP and cowdung (10 t/ha) were applied. Germination was ensured through freshwater and saline water irrigation. The medium saline canal water was used for irrigation when needed. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done when necessary. The crop was harvested at the time of maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

The final plant population/m² was recorded highest in Serajganj local which was significantly higher than all other lines and varieties. The number of days required for 50% flowering was recorded lowest in BKX-0002-4 which was significantly lower than the rest of the varieties/lines. Plant height (110.87 cm) was recorded highest in Serajganj local which was significantly higher than the rest of the varieties/lines. Branches/plant was found highest in Serajganj local which was significantly higher than the rest of the treatments. The highest no. of seeds/pod was observed in Serajganj local which was significantly higher than the rest of the varieties/lines. TSW (g) was recorded highest in Serajganj local which was significantly higher than the rest of the varieties/lines. The highest seed yield (1.30 t/ha) was recorded in Serajganj local which was significantly higher than the rest of the varieties/lines. A similar trend was observed in the case of straw yield (4.31 t/ha).
