Application of Growth Regulator for Synchronizing Ripening of Mungbean (2018--2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the research field of Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi and PRSS, BARI, Gazipur during 2018-19 to find out the suitable growth regulator to synchronize ripening of mungbean. There were six treatments viz T₁= Glycel (Glyphosate, 3.70 L/ha), T₂=Gramoxone (Paraquat, 2.25L/ha), T₃=Jaskot (Paraquat 20% and Glyphosate 41%), T₄= Bonmara (2, 4-D Amine, 2.80 L/ha), T₅= Ripen-15 (Ethephon, 1L/ha), T₆=Control. Treatments did not show a significant effect on the yield contributing characters of mungbean. The highest gross return was obtained from Ripen-15 (Tk. 30420 ha^-1) at Ishurdi and Gramoxon (Tk.28020 ha^-1) at Gazipur, but the highest MBCR (3.48 and 4.14 at Ishurdi and Gazipur, respectively) were got from Gramoxon. It was a suitable growth regulator to synchronize the ripening of mungbean because the crop was harvested at a time easily by hand within six days.

Objectives:

The present study has been undertaken to find out the most effective growth regulator to enhance mugbean ripening at a time.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Pulses Research Centre, Regional Agriculture Research Station, Ishurdi, and PRSS, BARI, Gazipur during 2018-19 to find out the suitable growth regulator to synchronize ripening of mungbean. The trial consisted of six chemical treatments such as T₁= Glycel (Glyphosate, 3.70 L/ha), T₂=Gramoxone (Paraquat, 2.25L/ha), T₃= JasKot (Paraquat 20% and Glyphosate 41%), T₄= Bonmara (2, 4-D Amine, 2.80 L/ha), T₅= Ripen-15 (Ethephon, 1 L/ha) T₆=Control. The experiment was designed a randomized complete block with three replications. The mungbean crop was sown on 03 April 2019 at Ishurdi and 19 March at Gazipur. The unit plot size was 20 m² (4 m x 5m). The fertilizers were applied @20-20-20 kg NPK /ha. BARI Mung-6 was sown with a line spacing of 30 cm@ 25 kg/ha. One hand weeding was done at 25 days after sowing (DAS) for controlling the weed. Emitaf (@ 2ml L^-1 was used one time for controlling insects. Growth regulators were applied 65 days after sowing (03 June 2019). The crop was harvested on 9 June 2019 at Ishurdi and 30 May 2019. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and the grain yield was recorded from the central area of four square meters of the plot and converted to t ha^-1. For the germination test, twenty-five seeds of each sample were placed in a Petri dish containing wet sand. The petri dish was placed at room temperature for 3 days for germination. Seedlings were counted on the third day. Germination percentage was calculated using the formula (Krishnasamy and Seshu, 1990).

R-software package was used for all statistical analyses. The mean differences between treatments were separated by the least significant difference (LSD) at P≤ 0.05 for the measured variables.

Achievement/Findings:

Different growth regulators showed no significant effect on the yield contributing characters. The plant height ranged from 49-55 cm, a number of branches plant^-1 ranged from 1.07-1.40 at Ishurdi, a number of pods plant^-1ranged from 9.53-12.07 at Ishurdi and 19-23 at Gazipur, 1000-grain weight ranged from 41-44 g at Ishurdi and 19-23 at Gazipur in different treatments. The seed yield varied from 393 to 507 kg ha^-1 at Ishurdi and 388-467 at Gazipur. The yield was low because a one-time harvest was done due to heavy rainfall. About a hundred percent of pods were synchronized in the application of Glycel, Gramoxon and Jajkot, Bonmora and Ripen varied from 90% to 92%. Dryness of leaf was also ranged from 95% to 100% in Glycel, Gramoxon and Jajkot. Bonmora showed less effect on a leaf, but Ripen did not affect the plant. Application of the first three chemicals ( Glycel, Gramoxon and Jajkot), mungbean were harvested after six days. The seed germination percentage varied 84%-96%.

Economic analysis of different treatments revealed that the highest cost was calculated in Bonmora treatment (Tk. 15220 ha^-1) due to the high cost of chemical and the lowest cost was computed in Gramoxon (Tk. 6770 ha^-1) due to less labour at harvesting and low cost of chemical. The highest gross return was obtained from Ripen-15 (Tk. 30420 ha^-1) at Ishurdi and Gramoxon (Tk. 28020 ha^-1) at Gazipur, but the highest MBCR (3.48 and 4.14 at Ishurdi and Gazipur, respectively) were got from Gramoxon.

Considering less time for harvesting after chemical application and MBCR it can be concluded that Gramoxon was a suitable growth regulator to synchronize ripening of mungbean because the crop was harvested at a time easily by hand within six days requiring less labour at harvesting avoiding labour cost for picking up of ripening pods.
