A feasibility study is made to use Rice Husk Ash (RHA) as an admixture and previous crop straw as mulch (SM), and an attempt has been made to investigate the effects of RHA and RS on yield and yield components of lentil in the rice-based cropping system. This field experiment started with lentil at Pulses Research Centre (PRC) during the rabi season of 2018-19. The other crops in the rotation were Mung bean and T.aman rice. In this report, only the results of lentil are presenting. There were seven treatments in the present experiment comprising Rice Husk Ash (RHA), Recommended Fertilizer Dose (RFD), SM and control. The addition of SM increased crop yield over other treatments and control. The tallest plant height, higher branches and pods likely contributed to increased grain and straw yield of lentil in SM treatment. However, there were no effects of RHA as an admixture with topsoil on the performance of lentil. This experiment will run over the next year for drawing a concrete conclusion.

This experiment has been undertaken with an aim to investigate the effects of RHA and straw mulch on yield and yield components of lentil.

A field experiment was conducted in Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna. The experimental field was a medium high land under the AEZ 11, High Ganges River Flood Plain. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications, each plot being 4m × 5m. The experiment started with lentil in the cool dry season in November 2018, followed by mung bean sown in the pre-monsoon season (March-June) then rice will be established in the monsoon season (July- October). This rotation will be continuing over the next three years. In this report, only the data of lentil crops are presenting in the rotation. The lentil crop (variety: BARI Masur-8) was sown on 26 November in 2018 and harvested at the fully mature stage on 16 March 2019. Fertilizers such as N, P, K, S, B and Zn were applied in the form of Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum, Boric acid and Zinc sulphate @ 40, 90, 40, 60,7 and 2 kg/ha during the final land preparation. Before sowing, rows of lentil were made with tyne maintaining 30 cm row to row distance. The seed rate at 30 kg/ha was used in rows of each plot and the rows were covered with soil using foot immediately after sowing. A light irrigation was given just after sowing to ensure germination. Provex @ 3 g/L water was applied on 9 and 17 January, 2019 at the seedling stage to control foot rot disease. A combination of  Rovral 50 wp @ 1 mL/L and Folicur EW 250 @ 2 g/L were applied on 6 February 2018 and later only Folicur 2 mL/L were applied on 14 February 2018 to control stemphylium blight disease of lentil. An insecticide, Imitaf 2.5 mL/L water also applied on 13 February 2019 to control Aphids. One hand weeding was done 30 days after sowing. In this experiment, there were seven treatment combinations

The plant population/m2, seeds/pod and 1000-seed weight were not significantly affected by different soil amendment treatments . However, the plant height, branches/plant, pods/plant and grain yield of lentil significantly affected by different soil amendment treatments. The addition of SM increased plant height (48.1 cm) compared to other treatments (40.0-43.0 cm). Similarly, application of SM resulted in an increased number of branches/plant (10.3) and pods/plant (114) while the shortest plant height (40.0), lower branches/plant (6.3) and pods/plant (64) were recorded in the control plot (T7). The least significant difference (LSD) at the P≤0.05, ns - not significant; CV – coefficient of variation. Finally, the grain yield (2.4 t/ha) and straw yield (2.5 t/ha) were higher in T6 as compared to other treatments (Table 2.22). However, the grain yield (1.5 t/ha) and straw yield (1.7 t/ha) was the lowest in T7 (control plot). Probably higher soil moisture as well as nutrient stored during the dryland condition as a result of retention of straw of all crops at surface soil lead to improve growth and yield of lentil. The results suggest that there was no effect of RHA on lentil crop whilst SM has an effect in increasing yield of dryland crop at Ishurdi.

Application of previous crop straw as mulch plus recommended dose of fertilizer increased plant height, branches/plant, pods/plant and eventually increased grain and straw yield of lentil as compared to Rice Husk Ash plus recommended dose of fertilizer and untreated control. Higher soil moisture and nutrient conservation in previous crop straw as mulch treated plot likely be associated with improved the crop growth and yield of lentil (dryland crop) in rice-based cropping system at Ishurdi. However, this study will be continuing over the next years for final conclusion.
