High nutrient contents in human excreta and urine are a well? established fact. Human excreta and urine are being widely used in different countries like China, Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique and India to their agricultural land in an organized way. The potentiality of nutrient content in human excreta is N (3-3.4%), P (2.7-5.4%), K (2.1-3.5%) and organic matter to some extent. On the other hand urine mixing with five times water contained N (0.7%), P (0.24%) and K (0.07%) in Bangladesh. Due to the crucial need of organic matter in soil and the lack of alternative sources of organic matter, human faeces and urine may be used as fertiliser for its nutrient content in vegetable production, which can serve as a soil conditioner. This allows farmers to reuse or minimize the purchase of chemical fertilizers as a consequence. Human excreta and urine allow the optimum recycling of nutrients and organic matter to agriculture. In this concern, a study was undertaken to know the effect of urine as fertilizer through vegetable production (cauliflower and cabbage) in two villages of Comilla District namely Raicho and Hatigara. The study in both villages showed a significant effect of urine as fertiliser for producing vegetables like cabbage and cauliflower. Urine acted as nutrient supplier as like chemical fertilizer, and urine is also capable to supply plant nutrients for survival of vegetables. This present study recommended that urine can act as fertiliser, and farmers may use urine as organic fertilizer for vegetables, production.

The main objective of the project is to resource recycle through sustainable sanitation and environmental management in Bangladesh. In connection with this project a study was undertaken in two project villages, Raicho and Joypur (south) of Comilla District to analyse the effect of urine as fertiliser in comparison with chemical fertiliser through vegetables production.

The study was conducted in two CVDP villages named Raicho and Joypur (South). Each demonstration plot contained four treatments in four sub-plots (each sub-plot area 36 sq m). Raicho village: In Raicho village Demonstration trial of Cauliflower was grown by using the following four treatments: * Treatment –T1: Recommended dose of chemical fertilizer like Urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 250kg/ha (900g/sub plot), 150 kg/ha (540g/sub plot) and 200kg/ha (720g/subplot). Here urea was applied three times accordingly 10,30,and 50 days after sowing. • Treatment –T2: TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 150 kg/ha (540g/sub plot) and 200kg/ha (720g/sub plot). On the other hand, urine was applied with mixing water (3-6 times) in the vegetable field in total six times .1st application was 20 L before sowing the seedling. Then the approximate amount of 10L, 15 L, 15L, 15 L, and 15L urine were applied according to 10, 30, 40, 60, and 70 days respectively after planting. * Treatment –T3: In this plot only urine was applied to test the efficiency of urine as urea fertilizer. Total six times, urine was applied with mixing water (3 times) in the vegetable field .1st application was 34L before sowing the seedling. Then the approximate amount of 20L, 30 L, 30 L, 30 L, and 30L urine were applied according to 10, 30, 40, 60,and 70 days respectively after planting * Treatment –T4: In this sub plot no input was applied (control). Joypur (South) village: In Raicho village Demonstration trial of Cabbage was grown by using following four treatments. * Treatment –T1: Recommended dose of chemical fertilizer applied in T1 (BARI?2004), Urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 300kg/ha (1080 g/ subplot), 200 kg/ha (720 g / sub plot) and 250 kg/ha (900 g/ sub plot). In this plot urea was applied three times accordingly 10,30, and 50days after sowing. * Treatment –T2: TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 200 kg/ha (720 g/sub plot) and 250 kg/ha (900 g/sub plot). On the other hand, urine was applied total six times with mixing water (1:3?6 times) in the vegetable field, as nitrogen fertilizer. 1st application was 25 L before sowing the seedling. Then the approximate amount of 20L, 30 L, 30 L, 25 L, and 25L urine were applied according to 10, 30, 40, 60, and 70 days respectively after planting * Treatment –T3: In this plot only urine was applied to test the efficiency of urine as fertilizer. Urine was applied with mixing water (1:3?6 times) in the vegetable field total six times .1st application was 40L before transplanting the seedling. Then the approximate amount of 40L, 50 L, 60 L, 50 L, and 50L urine were applied according to 10, 30, 40, 60, and 70 days respectively after planting. * Treatment –T4: In this sub-plot no input was applied (control). Collection and analysis of urine: The newly introduced eco-toilet contains a urine tank, where urine stored during the urination or defecation time. Due to the washing habit of the people after urination, some water was also mixed with urine that flows to the urine tank. Urine samples were collected from the eco-toilet and make a composite sample. The urine working sample was analyzed in Central Laboratory, Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI), Dhaka. Nutrient content of stored urine (volume basis) ,PH 8.7, N 0.7%, P 0.24%, K 0.07%.

The study was undertaken in two villages of Comilla District, Raicho and Hatigara to know the effect of urine as fertilizer through cabbage and cauliflower production. The results of the study showed a significant effect of urine as fertilizer for producing vegetables like cabbage and cauliflower. Urine acts as a nutrient supplier as like chemical fertilizer and also capable to supply plant nutrients for vegetable production. The present study suggested that urine could act as fertilizer and farmers may use it as organic fertilizer for vegetable production. Now?a?days Bangladesh agriculture faces lack of organic matter and organic fertilizer, and soil productivity, fertility and stability is decreasing day by day. To overcome this situation urine could be considered as alternative sources of nitrogen fertilizer to improve soil health in agricultural production.
