Field Screening of Native Blackgram Lines Resistant to Yellow Mosaic Virus and Powdery Mildew in Natural Condition (2018--2019)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at Regional Pulses Research Station (RPRS), Madaripur during the Kharif-II season of 2018 to evaluate the germplasms of locally collected black gram for searching of yellow mosaic virus and high yielding resistant genotypes. A significant difference was observed in every important parameter like scoring of BYMV, no of pods/plant, 100 seed weight, and seed yield (kg/ha) etc. The line BD-6853 provided the lowest YMV score (2.00) and the highest (6.00) was in BD-6869. The line BD-6814 and BD-10047 gave the highest seed yield (1833 kg/ha) and the lowest (1267 kg/ha) in BD-10040.

Objectives:

The study was undertaken to select some locally collected YMV resistant/tolerant lines of black gram.

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of 23 entries with BARI Mash-1 as a check variety was conducted at RPRS, Madaripur during Kharif-II, 2018. The experiment was laid out in two replications in Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design. Each entry was sown in a unit plot of 12m x 3m long with a spacing of 40 cm between rows. The germplasms were collected from PGRC, BARI, Gazipur. Spacing between two plots was 1m. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and then covered with soils on 10 September 2018. Two weedings were done at 25 days and 45 days after sowing to keep plots free from weeds. Each of the entries was investigated from seedling to harvest and compared with check. Volium Flexi 300SC were sprayed 2 times for the control of flee beetle, aphid and pod borer. The crop was harvested within November 21-22, 2018. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) of mungbean was rated 0-8 scale used in this experiment described by Malik (1992). Powdery mildew (Erysiphe poligoni or Oidium sp.) of blackgram was recorded on a 0-5 scoring scale (Gawande and Patil, 2003). Seed yield (kg/ha) was recorded from the whole plot. Achievement/Findings:

The tested black gram entries differ significantly from one to another in respect of BYMV under field conditions. The maximum score (6.00) of BYMV found in the line BD-6869 and the minimum (2.00) in BD-6853. Among 24 lines, none achieved immune reaction, one was graded as highly resistant which bear the score of 2.00, eight lines fall into resistant group bearing score 3.00, nine were graded as moderately resistant bearing score 4.00, five lines graded as moderately tolerant bearing score 5.00 and one line having score 6.00 occupy moderately tolerant group. The check variety BARI Mash-1 had a score of 3.00 achieved a resistant reaction. Like BYMV another disease, powdery mildew showed complete variation in respect of disease reaction under field conditions. Powdery mildew disease reaction of the entries varied from 0.00-5.00. Among the 24 lines, two achieved highly resistant reaction bearing score 0.00, two lines fall into moderately resistant group bearing score 2.00, two lines graded as susceptible group bearing score 4.33-4.67 and seventeen gemplasm were graded as highly susceptible bearing score 4.33-4.67. The check variety BARI Mash-1 had a score of 5.00 achieved a highly susceptible reaction. Yield and yield contributing characters of the germplasms are presented in Table 4.14. The range in days to flowering was 32-35. The ranges in days to maturity were 80-82. No. of branches/plant ranged from 1.67-2.67. Plant height (cm) was ranged from 33.00-39.00. The number of pods/plants ranged from 14.87-42.60. The maximum number of pods/plant (42.60) was counted in BD-6848 and the minimum (14.87) in BD-6869. The number of seeds/pod was ranged from 5.20-7.27. The maximum (7.27) number of seeds/pod found in BD-6838 was the lowest (5.20) in BD-6853. 100 seed wt. ranged from 5.37-6.50. The highest weight of 100 seeds (6.50 g) was recorded in BD-6859 and the lowest (5.37 g) in BD-6865. Seed yield (kg/ha) varied from 1267–1833. The highest seed yield (1833 kg/ha) was recorded in BD-6814 and BD-10047 and the lowest (1267 kg/ha) in BD-10040. Considering BYMV and PM scoring scale and yield together, the relative position of the genotypes with respect to check did not follow any definite trend. Considering overall performance, the lines BD-6840, BD-6841, BD-6814, BD-6833 rated resistant over check BARI Mash-1. Of them, BD-6841 was the best
