Response of promising varieties/entries of mungbean against flower thrips and pod borers were studied at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during Kharif-I, 2019. Flower infestation, thrips population and pod borer infestation varied significantly among the varieties/entries. The lowest flower infestation was observed in BARI Mung-8 followed by BINA Mung-8, thrips population was  BARI Mung-8 followed by BMXK108 011-2 and pod borer infestation was BARI Mung-8 followed by  BMXK1 05008-2, respectively. Significantly the highest yield (1914 kg/ha) was obtained from BMXK108 011-2 followed BINA Mung-8 (1657 kg/ha). Considering the insect pests reaction and yield potentiality the entry BMXK108 011-2 might be a promising one to be a variety in the future.

The present study has been taken to finding out the more resistant mungbean varieties/entries against flower thrips and pod borers along with grain higher yield.

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during Kharif-I, 2019. Treatments were ten promising varieties/entries viz., BARI Mung-6, BARI Mung-7, BARI Mung-8, BINA Mung-5, BINA Mung-8, BMXK105008-2, BMXK107007-4, BMXK109012-1, BMXK1 08011-2 & MB 08. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments (varieties/entries) were randomly allotted in each block. The unit plot size was 3m x 4m with a distance of 1m between the plots and 1.5 m between the replications. The seeds of the respective varieties/entries were sown on March 28 in rows with the spacing of 30 cm. The unit plot contains 10 rows x 4m. The plant populations were maintained constant by keeping plant to plant distance 7 cm.  Urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and boric acid were applied @ 40-90-40-7.5 kg/ha during final land preparation. Post sowing flood irrigation was done to provide sufficient soil moisture for seed germination to get optimum plant population in all the treatments. The population data for thrips in flowers were collected at the peak flowering stage of the varieties/entries. Thrips population was assessed from 20 opened flowers which were randomly collected from two rows of each side of the plot avoiding border and central four rows. The collected flowers were immediately opened on the white paper board and counted the adult and immature thrips present in the flowers. Central four rows were kept undisturbed for recording yield data. At maturity, all pods were collected from 10 randomly selected plants from the central four rows of each plot and examined. The infested (bored) and total numbers of pods were counted and the percent pod infestation was calculated. The pods of the central four rows of each plot comprising a 4.8 m2 (1.2 x 4m) area were harvested. The pods were then threshed; grains were cleaned and sun-dried. The grains obtained from each plot were converted into kg/ha.

The experimental data were analyzed by Statistix 10 software. The percent infestation data were transformed by square root for statistical analysis. Mean comparisons for treatment parameters were compared using LSD All-Pairwise Comparisons Test at a 5% level of significance.

Mungbean flower infestation and thrips population varied significantly among the varieties/entries. The lowest percentage of flower infestation (78.33%) was observed in BARI Mung-8 which was statistically identical to BINA Mung-8 and the entry BMXK105 008-2. Rest other varieties/entries received a little bit higher flower infestation which was more or less similar and the highest (94.17%) was in BINA Mung-5. Thrips population per infested flower also varied among the varieties/entries. The lowest thrips population (2.38/infested flower) was also observed in BARI Mung-8 which was statistically similar to BARI Mung-6, BARI Mung-7, BMXK105 008-2, BMXK108 011-2 and BM 08. Rest other varieties/entries received a higher number of thrips which was more or less similar and the highest thrips population (3.26/infested flower) was observed in BMXK1 07 007-4.  All the tested promising varieties/entries showed a non-significant effect on the receiving of pod borer infestation. Among the germplasm, BARI Mung-8 received the lowest pod borer infestation (4.17%) followed by entry BMXK105 008-2, MB 08 and BMXK108 011-2. The highest pod borer infestation (7.0%) was observed in BMXK1 09 012-1.  Yield varied significantly depending on the level of insect pest infestation and the yield potentiality of the germplasm. Significantly the highest yield (1914 kg/ha) was recorded from BMXK108011-2. The second highest yield (1657 kg/ha) was obtained from  BINA Mung-8 which was statistically identical to BINA Mung-5 followed by BARI Mung-6 and BARI Mung-7. The lowest yield (1214 kg/ha) was recorded from BARI Mung-8. Flower infestation, thrips population and pod borer infestation varied among the varieties/entries. Although the lowest flower infestation, thrips population and pod borer infestation was observed in BARI Mung-8 but it could not provide the highest yield. The highest yield (1914 kg/ha) was obtained from BMXK1 08011-2 followed by BINA Mung-8 (1657 kg/ha). The experiment will be repeated in the next year for confirmation of the results.
