On Farm Verification Trial of Garlic Variety

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at MLT site Bauphal and MLT site Kuakata during rabi season of 2019-20 with different types of BARI released Garlic varieties, e.g: BARI Rosun-1, BARI Rosun-2, BARI Rosun-3, BARI Rosun-4 and Local Rosun, to observe their performance in farmers’ field. Among the varieties at both locations, Bauphal and Kuakata BARI Rosun-3 gave the highest yield (5.06 t ha^-1) and (4.79 t ha^-1) respectively. Local Rosun gave the lowest seed yield (4.07 t ha^-1 and 3.99 t ha^-1) at both locations.

Objectives:

1. to study the performance of garlic varieties at southern coastal region of Bangladesh under farmers’ field condition

2. to increase production and economic return of the farmers

Methodology:

An observation trial was conducted at MLT site Bauphal and MLT site Kuakata during rabi season of 2019-20 with BARI Rosun-1, BARI Rosun-2, BARI Rosun-3, BARI Rosun-4 and Local Rosun were evaluated in randomized complete block design with three replications in each. Unit plot size was 6m X 4m. The bulbs of the varieties were dibbed in the field on 17 December 2019 at Bauphal and 18 December 2019 at Kuakata maintaining a spacing of 15cm × 10cm. Crops were harvested at 24 March to 29 March 2020. The land was fertilized with 217-267-333-110 kg N-P-K-S ha^-1in the form of Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum, respectively along with 5.0 t ha^-1cowdung (BARI, 2011). Half amount of Urea and MoP and full dose of cowdung, TSP, gypsum were applied as basal during final land preparation. The rest amount of urea and MoP were top dressed in two equal installments at 25 and 50 days after planting (DAP). Irrigation was done 30 days after sowing and 120 DAP, respectively. Weeding was done as and when necessary. Yield and yield attributes were recorded properly.The data were statistically analyzed and means were separated by critical difference (CD) values at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

At southern coastal region commercial garlic cultivation is not common. Farmers show interest about garlic varieties due to its higher yield. From this trial it may be concluded that BARI Rosun-3 performed better than other four varieties and it may be recommended for cultivation in farmer's field.
