The seasoning schedule of Borak (Bambusa balcooa), Baijja (Bambusa vulgaris) and Dolu (Schizo stachyum) round bamboo species were determined by using a solar kiln. The seasoning time of Borak bansh required 30 days to attain 14% moisture content in the solar kiln and 69 days in air-dry conditions, seasoning time of baijja required 27 days to attain 14% moisture content in the solar kiln and 63 days in air-dry conditions and seasoning time of dolu required 24 days to attain 14% moisture content in the solar kiln and 45 days in air-dry conditions, respectively. Moisture content decreased with an increase in time duration. These findings of the seasoning schedule of bamboo can ensure proper and sustainable use of bamboo. Structural Engineers can use these results to innovate advanced technology in cottage industries and bamboo structures.

To derived the determine seasoning schedule of borak (Bambusa balcooa), baijja (Bambusa vulgaris) and dolu (Schizo stachyum) round bamboo for the end user.

Two bamboo species borak bansh (Bambusa balcooa) and baijja bansh (Bambusa vulgaris) were procured from a village grove of Bansh Khali in Chattogram. One bamboo species dolu bansh (Schizo stachyum) were collected from a village grove of Kaptai in Rangamati Hill District. The bamboos of three years old were selected because the culms attain maturity at this age (Espiloy1991, Sattar et al. 1990). In the present study, the Indian method (Anon, 1973) was followed. Three height positions- bottom, middle and top of the culm were also considered for each investigation. Nine bamboos culms were used for each species for replication of the test. All the research activities of this research study have been done in the research laboratory in the Seasoning and Timber Physics Division of Bangladesh Forest Research Institute. Moisture content and specific gravity- The specimen for moisture content and specific gravity were taken in the form of a pair of 2.5 cm. rings from each of the height positions. Moisture content was determined by weighting the specimens in green condition and then oven drying them. The specific gravity was determined on the basis of both green and oven-dry volumes. The initial volume was taken in green condition and the specimens were then oven-dried, weighed, soaked in melted paraffin, and oven-dry volume was determined. In both cases, the volume was ascertained by the water displacement method. Seasoning- Each culm was divided into three equal portions- bottom, middle and top which represent three height levels. Again each portion was divided into two (sample) equal parts. The length of each sample was eight feet. A total number of the sample were one hundred and eight. For the determination of seasoning properties 54 samples were taken for both solar kiln seasoning and air drying. The samples were arranged by 2.5 cm space in the stackyard both for air drying and inside the solar kiln for seasoning purposes. Samples were prepared as per the specification of Indian standard (IS). The initial and the final moisture content were determined using a hammer-type wood moisture meter every 2-3 days. The total drying time from green condition to 12-14% moisture content (MC) of the bamboo species was recorded.

The moisture content of borak bamboo was substantially higher than that of baijja and dolu bamboos. In three bamboos species the moisture content changed significantly with the culm height. The specific gravity of borak bansh (Bambusa balcooa), baijja bansh (Bambusa vulgaris) and dolu bansh (Schizo stachyum) bamboo was found to increase from the bottom to the top position based on both green and ovendry volumes. Seasoning characteristics of borak bansh (Bambusa balcooa), baijja bansh (Bambusa vulgaris and dolu bansh (Schizo stachyum) were determined using solar kiln and air dry method. Comparative performance of solar kiln showed its superiority in consideration to prevent biodegradation and time duration. Data indicate that the seasoning time for dolu bansh (Schizo stachyum) showed better performance than other two bamboo species both in the solar kiln and air drying conditions. To attain lower moisture content within a short period, solar kiln be used as proved by the results obtained. Bamboo quality after solar drying is much better than that obtained by the air-drying method. The specific gravity of borak bansh (Bambusa balcooa), baijja bansh (Bambusa vulgaris) and dolu bansh (Schizo stachyum) bamboos was found to increase from the bottom to the top position based on both green and ovendry volumes.
