Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Exploration and collection of multicrop germplasm were conducted in thirteen districts namely Munshiganj, Manikganj, Khagrachari, Rangamati, Kishoreganj, Gazipur, Jhalokathi, Pirozpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Dinajpur, and Dhaka. The landraces and primitive crop cultivars/germplasm were mostly collected including indigenous vegetable and other crop plants. A total of 394 germplasm of 51 different crops were collected during 2014-15.

Objectives:

Indigenous vegetables, their use in native food habit, nutritional and anti-nutritional/toxic composition, medicinal values, adaptability in stress climate, indigenous technical knowledge (ITK) couple with conventional and molecular breeding could go a long way in food security through PGR collection and exploration and conservation of specific gene to combat biotic and abiotic stresses.

Methodology:

During 2014-15, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Khagrachari, Rangamati, Kishoreganj, Gazipur, Jhalokathi, Pirozpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Dinajpur, and Dhaka districts were explored. However, the collector’s team was equipped with an altimeter, compass, cameras, hand lens, seed, knife, scissors, drying sheet, pencil, stapler etc. The necessary information such as the donor’s name, altitude, the latitude of the respective crop region was recorded on the passport datasheet. The sample was collected as seeds and fruits from individual plants or populations. Sites for collecting the germplasm in the target area were selected considering the nature of the crop, availability of germplasm and communication.

Achievement/Findings:

During the 2014-15 season, 394 indigenous germplasm of 51 different crops were collected from 13 districts viz. Munshiganj, Manikganj, Khagrachari, Rangamati, Kishoreganj, Gazipur, Jhalokathi, Pirozpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Dinajpur, and Dhaka located in different regions of the country. The collected germplasm of different crops from different districts. Diverse germplasm is the building block of breeding a new variety but unfortunately, we are losing valuable genetic resources day by day. So more effort and emphasis should be given to collect and conserve diverse plant genetic resources.
