A field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre (PRC) and Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) during the rabi season of 2016-17 and 2017-18 to investigate the effects of foliar application of zinc on yield and yield components of lentil. There were five concentration levels of Zn (0.01 %, 0.02 %, 0.03 %, 0.04 % and 0.06%) in 2016-17 and four concentration levels of Zn (0.02 %, 0.03 %, 0.04 % and 0.06%) applied as foliar and 2kg/ha Zn applied to the soil which were compared to control (no foliar and no soil application) in 2017-18. Foliar applications of Zn were carried out at only one time at the vegetative stage (pre-flowering stages). The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design and replicated three times. Parameters measured were grain and straw yield, plant population/ m², plant height, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod and 1000 grain weight. There were no significant differences between the foliar application of Zn and control for any of the measured parameters of lentil in a rice-based system. Although the yield of lentil was not significantly affected due to foliar application of Zn, increasing the concentrations of Zn increased lentil yield in both years.

This experiment has been undertaken to assess the foliar application of zinc on yield and yield performance of lentil, next after rice.

The study was conducted at the Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh. The soil of the experimental site belongs to Agro-Ecological Zone – 11 (High Ganges River Flood Plains). The initial soil properties at 0-15 cm soil depth of adjacent experimental plots (homogenous soil types) are given in Table 2.5.The mean annual rainfall of about 1200 ± 300 mm. The experiment was conducted from November 2016 to March 2017. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated three times. In 2016-17, the unit plot size was 9.6 m² (4 m X 2.4 m). There were five concentrations of Zn like 0.01 %, 0.02 %, 0.03 %, 0.04 %, 0.06 % were applied as foliar at only the pre-flowering stage, two levels of Zn fertilizer as ZnSO4 (1 and 2 kg/ha Zn) were applied in soil and control (no Zn fertilizer applied either by foliar or soil). In this report, we are presenting only the results of Zn foliar application and control of 2016-17.  The lentil variety of BARI Masur-6 was used in this experiment. In 2017-18, the unit plot size was 6 m² (3 m X 2 m). This year four concentration levels of Zn (0.02 %, 0.03 %, 0.04 % and 0.06%) as foliar were applied and a Zn fertilizer as ZnSO4 @ 2kg/ha applied topsoil which was compared to control (no foliar and no soil application). In addition to BARI Masur-6, BARI Masur-7 and BARI Masur-8 also tested for this experiment. However, we are only presenting the results of BARI Masur 6 in the current report as the data collections of other varieties are still in progress. In 2016-17, the seeds of lentil were sown on 25 November 2016 and harvested on 2 March 2017 and in 2017-18, the seeds of lentil were sown on 29 November 2017 and harvested on 7 March 2018. The recommended nutrient such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium @ 20-40-20 kg/ha were applied as basal dose at final land preparation. Similar agronomic management practices were done as per requirement for all the treatments. One hand weeding at 25 days after sowing was performed to control the weed. Fungicide, insecticide and pesticide were applied as per the requirement to manage disease, pest and insect if any. Data were recorded for grain and straw yield, plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and 1000 grain weight. Data were analyzed statistically using STAR software. The means differences among the treatments were compared by the least significant difference test (LSD) at 0.05 levels.

The yield and yield components of lentil in the rice-based system did not differ significantly among foliar application of Z. Although, there were no yield advantages of foliar Zn application over control, increasing the concentrations of Zn increased lentil yield in both years. However, this experiment needs to be continued for the next year by applying foliar Zn at different times at different concentrations using few other varieties of lentil.
