A feasibility study is made to use Rice Husk Ash (RHA) as an admixture and Rice Straw (RS) as mulch, and an attempt has been made to investigate the effects of RHA and RS on yield and yield components of lentil and succeeding crop in the rice-based cropping system. This field experiment started with lentil at Pulses Research Centre (PRC) during the rabi season of 2017-18. The other crops in the rotation are Mung bean and T.aman rice. In this report, only the results of the first crop (lentil) are presenting as only the life cycle of the first crop just completed since the initiation of the experiment. The four treatments were as follows in the present experiment: Rice Husk Ash @ 2 t/ha + Recommended Fertilizer Dose (RFD), RFD, Rice straw @ 5 t/ha, Control. The addition of RS as mulch increased crop yield by 22 % over control. The tallest plant height, higher branches and pods likely contributed to the increased grain yield of lentil in RS. However, the effects of RHA as an admixture with topsoil on the performance of the first crop, lentil is not clear. This experiment will run over the next three years for drawing a concrete conclusion.

This experiment has been undertaken with an aim to investigate the effects of RHA and RSon yield and yield components of lentil.

A field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna. The experimental field was a medium high land under the AEZ 11, High Ganges River Flood Plain. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications, each plot being 4m × 5m. The experiment started with lentil in the cool dry season in November 2017, followed by mungbean sown in the pre-monsoon season (March-June) then rice will be established in the monsoon season (July- October). This rotation will be continuing over the next three years. In this report, we are only presenting the data of Crop 1 (lentil crop) in the rotation. The lentil crop (variety: BARI Masur-7) was sown on 21 November 2017 and harvested at the fully mature stage on 7 March 2018. Fertilizers such as N, P, K, S, B and Zn were applied in the form of Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum, Boric acid and Zinc sulphate @ 40, 90, 40, 60,7 and 2 kg/ha during the final land preparation. Before sowing, rows of lentil were made with tyne maintaining 30 cm row to row distance. The seed rate at 30 kg/ha was used in rows of each plot and the rows were covered with soil using foot immediately after sowing. A light irrigation was given just after sowing to ensure germination. Provex and Knowing 50 wp @ 1 g/l water were applied on 7 December 2017 at the seedling stage to control foot rot disease. A combination of Rovral 50 wp @ 1 ml/l and Folicur EW 250 @ 2 g/L were applied on 6 February 2018 and again only Folicur 2 ml/l were applied on 14 February 2018 to control stemphylium blight disease of lentil. An insecticide, Imitaf 2.5 ml/l water also applied on 13 February 2018 to control Aphids. One hand weeding was done 30 days after sowing. In this experiment, there were seven treatments. However, four from total seven treatments (considering one from similar treatments) — RHA @ 2 t/ha + RFD, RFD, RS @ 5 t/ha + RFD and RFD were considered to prepare a clear and concise presentation. In this report, the RHA and RS effects on yield and yield contributing characters of lentil were compared to Control. Five plants from each plot were selected for collecting yield contributing characters of lentil. The crop yield in each plot was determined by harvesting the crops from two randomly selected quadrats of 1 m2 area. Data were analyzed statistically using STAR software. The means differences among the treatments were compared by the least significant difference test (LSD) at 0.05 levels.

Application of RS increased plant height branches/plant, pods/plant and finally increased grain yield as compared to RHA and untreated control. Higher soil moisture conservation during the dry land condition under RS likely improved crop growth and yield of lentil in the rice-based cropping system at Ishurdi. In the current report, the first crops of the rotation are presenting. However, this study will be continuing over the next 2-3 years for the conclusion.
