Higher education is playing a pivotal role to ensure the sustainable development of Bangladesh. Students’ academic performance is one of the main indicators of the quality of academic institutions. It may depend on various personnel involved in academic, administrative and also their working environment. This study aims to identify the determinants of the educational performance of the students of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). For measuring students’ academic performance, the stationarity test of the transition probability matrix of the grades of students in successive semesters was used. Step-wise multiple regression analysis was used to identify the determinants of students’ academic performance. The results reveal that the variation in student’s performance occurred over time (semester to semester). Students’ academic results were significantly associated with students’ study hours, and satisfaction about their results, degree and study environment. This study recommends for better student counseling system, improvement of curricula and teaching methods and proper maintenance of the study environment.

To reveal the switching pattern of the academic results of the BAU graduates and construct a model to identify determinants of students’ academic performance.

Data: Primary data on the academic performance and different socio-economic characteristics were collected from 220 randomly selected graduate students of the academic session 2009-2010 representing all the six faculties of BAU using a structured questionnaire. Secondary data on semester-wise grades of the students have been collected from the Dean's office of the Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology to calculate the transition matrix. Due to time constraints, the grade results of students of other faculties were not possible to collect. However, it is anticipated that the pattern of the students’ performance will be the same as the students share the same academic environment. Transition Matrices of Student’s Educational Performance: Markov chain models were used to study students’ educational performance over time (Asmussen, 2003). Besides, the behavior of a Markov chain depends on the transition matrix which contains transition probabilities. In most practical studies the transition matrix is unknown and estimated from the empirical distribution. However, one of the important objectives of this study is to assess the students’ performance over time (semester to semester). Transition matrices have been developed on the basis of the academic results data of graduate students of the Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology of sessions 2009-2010. The grade point averages (GPA) of the students were collected for all semesters. Let Rn be the states of grade point averages whose possible values are A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+ and C. The transitions from one state to another state depend only on the present state, not the previous one. Therefore, it is reasonable to consider {Rn} as a Markov chain with eight states. Step-wise Regression analysis: Step-wise regression analysis was used to identify the factors affecting education performance: In this study, student’s education performance (SEP) is considered as a linear function of other correlates.

The regression equation showed that average graduate student’s performance positively increased by 0.072 times with one unit increase of study hour. A great extent of change in students’ academic performances could be achieved by bringing expected change in student’s satisfaction about results, degrees through counseling and by improving the study environment of the students. Similar results were observed by Zaman et al. (2009), and Hijazi and Raza (2006). Students’ satisfaction about the degree seems to influence their performance. In Bangladesh choice of a student to enroll to a degree of their interest is limited to a section of urban students, consequently leaving many of them with dissatisfaction with their degree. This leads to poor performance in academic results as indicated by Grissmer (2003), King and Bellow (1989) and Haveman and Wolfe (1995). This research considered other correlates of students’ performance suggested by other studies but these were not significant. This study recommends for a better student counseling system especially for the first year students of BAU. Curricula and teaching methods should be updated to engage student more in study with increased study hours. Finally, study environment should be made more favourable with standard facilities to ensure better performance of the students.
