Performance of Short Duration Lentil Genotypes in Saline Areas (2017--2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2017-18 to find out the suitable short duration lentil genotypes for better crop growth, adaptation and yield in the saline areas. There were 5 lentil genotypes viz. LRIL-22-205, LRIL-22-133, LRIL-22-68, BLX-05008-15 and LRIL-22-70. The highest seed yield (0.36 t/ha) was recorded in LRIL-22-70 which was statistically similar with LRIL-22-68 and BLX-05008-15 but significantly higher than the rest of the varieties/lines. The number of days required to maturity was highest in BLX-05008-15 which was statistically different from all other lines. LRIL-22-70 can be a promising high-yielding line for coastal areas of Bangladesh due to its high yield and short durational capacity than all other lines.

Objectives:

An experiment has been planned to find out the suitable short duration lentil genotype for better crop growth and yield in saline area

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station (ARS), BARI, Benarpota, Satkhira during the rabi season of 2017-18 to find out the suitable short duration lentil genotypes for better crop growth, adaptation and yield in the saline areas. The soil belonged to the AEZ-11 and AEZ -13. The land topography was medium-high. The soil of the experimental field is clay loam in texture. There were 5 lentil genotypes viz. LRIL-22-205, LRIL-22-133, LRIL-22-68, BLX-05008-15 and LRIL-22-70.The unit plot size was 3m X 3m. Seeds were sown in the field in 28 November 2016. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. Recommended doses of Fertilizers @ 14-20-20-10 kg/ha of NPKS were applied as basal during final land preparation. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done when necessary. The crop was harvested at the time of maturity. At every 15 days interval, soil and water salinities (dS/m) were measured by EC meter (HANNA: HI 9835). Data on yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically using MSTAT-C program.

Achievement/Findings:

The final plant population/m² was recorded highest in BLX-05008-15 which was statistically similar with all other lines except LRIL-22-133. Plant height (cm) was recorded highest in BLX-05008-15 which was statistically similar with all other lines except LRIL-22-133. Branches/plant was found highest as well as same in BLX-05008-15 and LRIL-22-205 which was statistically similar with LRIL-22-68 and LRIL-22-68 but significantly higher than LRIL-22-133. The number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod and 1000 seed weight etc had no significant difference among the tested lines. TSW (g) was recorded lowest in LRIL-22-68. The highest straw yield (t/ha) was recorded in BLX-05008-15 which was significantly higher than the rest of the varieties/lines. But the highest seed yield (0.36 t/ha) was recorded in LRIL-22-70 which was statistically similar with LRIL-22-68 and BLX-05008-15 but significantly higher than the rest of the varieties/lines. The number of days required to maturity was highest in BLX-05008-15 which was statistically different from all other lines. The lowest level (1.95 dS/m) of soil salinity was recorded at the sowing time LRIL-22-68 and the highest level of salinity (9.88 dS/m) was recorded at the harvesting stage LRIL-22-205. LRIL-22-70 can be a promising high yielding line for coastal areas of Bangladesh due to its high yield and short durational capacity than all other lines. It is the first year of the experiment. It would be continued for 2-3 years for final recommendation.
