Characterization of Horse Gram Germplasm (2014--2015)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Gazipur during 2014-15 to know the diversity of 30 accessions of horse gram (Macrotyloma uniflorum Lam). Qualitative character variation was found in seed color and mottling on the seed. Brown (40%) and mixed (60%) seed color were exhibited among the accessions. Mottling on seed showed absent (53.33%), light (6.66%) and medium (40%). All other qualitative characters showed no variation among the accessions. The maximum CV was found in Pods per plant (46.37%) and the lowest in days to flowering (7.71%).

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to know the variation of horse gram accessions.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Gazipur during winter 2014-15. Thirty accessions of horse gram were used in this study. Line sowing was done in 3m long of 3 rows plot. Row to row distance was 50 cm and plot to plot distance was 100 cm. The seeds were sown on 26 October 2014. Chemical fertilizers such as urea 50 kg/ha, TSP 95 kg/ha, MP 40 kg/ha(Mondalet al., 2011) were applied during final land preparation followed by pulse crop. Normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to have a good crop. Data were recorded as per IBPGR (1980) descriptors for pulse crop (Mung bean).

Achievement/Findings:

Qualitative characteristics of different accessions were recorded. Two (2) types of seed colour such as brown color (12 accessions), and mixed seed color (18 accessions) were exhibited among the accessions. Mottling on seeds found absent (16 accessions), light (2 accessions) and medium (12 accessions). Other qualitative characters such as hypocotyl color, leaf pubescence, terminal leaflet shape, leaf color, petiole color, growth habit, growth pattern, twining tendency, leaf senescence, raceme position, calyx color, corolla color, pod color at an immature stage, pod color at the mature stage, pod pubescence, the shape of ripe pod, constriction of pod between seeds, pod curvature, lustre on seed surface, seed shape and hilum showed no variations among the accessions.

Range, mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation were recorded. Days to Emergence ranged from 2 to 8. Days to flowering ranged from 42 to 49. On average, plant height was 46.03cm. The number of branches was 3.4 to 8. Pod length ranged from 2.26 to 5.68cm.Pods/plants ranged from 4 to 43.2. Seeds/ pod ranged from 1.8 to 5. 1000 seed weight ranged from 13to100g. The highest CV was found in Pods/ plant (46.37%) and the lowest in days to flowering (7.71%). Thirty accessions of horse gram showed color variation in the seed. Variation was observed in mottling on the seed. Good variation was observed among 8 quantitative characters. Characterization was not being completed the following accessions (BD-7246 and BD-7250) due to failure of germination. So, it will be characterized in the next year. The sufficient seeds were obtained for long-term conservation which ranged was 2.45 to 45.8 g.
