The field experiment was carried out at Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi during rabi season 2017-18 to find out the effect of shoot picking for vegetables on growth, yield and economic return of grass pea. The treatments used for the experiment were T1 = One time Vegetable harvest at 40 DAE (days after emergence), T2=Two times vegetable harvest at 40 & 50 DAE, T3 = Three times vegetable harvest at 40, 50 &60 DAE, T4 = Four times vegetable harvest at 40, 50, 60 & 70 DAE, T5 = Two times vegetable harvest at 60 & 70 DAE and T6 = Control. The highest seed yield (853 kg ha-1) and vegetables were obtained from T5 and T4, respectively.  The lowest seed yield (350 kg ha-1) was obtained from Control (T6). From the cost and return analysis it was observed that two times vegetable harvest at 60 & 70 DAE (T5) gave the highest gross return (91950 Tk. ha-1), gross margin (65950 Tk. ha-1) and BCR (3.53) where control (T6) gave the lowest gross return (36160 Tk. ha-1) and gross margin (14160 Tk. ha-1).

To find out the optimum time and frequency of shoot picking for vegetables, and its effect on growth and yield of vegetable and grain yield as well as an economic benefit.

The field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi season 2017-18. The experimental area is located under the High Gangis River Flood Plain (AEZ 11). The soils of the experimental plots were clay loam in texture. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. It has consisted of six treatments as follows: T1 = One-time vegetable harvest at 40 DAE, T2=Two times vegetable harvest at 40 & 50 DAE, T3 =Three times vegetable harvest at 40, 50 &60 DAE, T4 =Four times vegetable harvest at 40, 50, 60 & 70 DAE, T5 =Two times vegetable harvest at 60 & 70 DAE and T6 =Control. The unit plot size was 20 m2 (5 m x 4m). The lands were fertilized with 20-20-20 NPK kg N-P-K ha-1, respectively. One-third of urea and the entire amount of all the fertilizers were applied before seed broadcasting and the rest two-third of urea was applied as top dress after rice harvesting (after 7 days). BARI Khesari-3 was broadcasted on 28 October 2017 in the existing rice field before 15 days of rice harvest and the seed rate was  60 kg ha-1. One hand weeding was done 40 days after sowing (DAS) for controlling the weed. Tafgor (@ 2ml L-1) and Rovral were used one time for controlling insect and disease at 70 DAS. The crop was harvested on 30 March 2018. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and grain yield (kg ha-1) was recorded from the whole plot. The MSTAT-C software package was used for all statistical analyses. The mean differences between treatments were separated by the least significant difference (LSD) at P≤ 0.05 for the measured variables.

The yield attributes of grass pea were influenced due to time of shoot picking except for pant population, a number of seeds pod-1 and thousand seed weight. The maximum number of branches plant-1 (5.93) and pod plant-1 (32) was recorded in T5 and the lowest number of pod plant-1 (18) was obtained from T6 (control). The numbers of seeds pod-1 and 1000-seed weight did not differ significantly among the treatments. The highest seed yield (1325 kg ha-1) was recorded from two times vegetable harvest at 60 & 70 DAE (T5) which was followed by  T2 (1230 kg ha-1). This might be due to the cumulative effect of yield contributing characters i.e. number of pods plant-1 and branches plant-1. The highest vegetable yield (1686 kg ha-1) was recorded from T4and the highest fodder yield (33667 kg ha-1) was gained from T1.

Cost and return analysis

Two times vegetable harvest at 60 & 70 DAE (T5) gave the maximum gross return (Tk. 122617 ha-1) and gross margin (Tk. 82617ha-1) followed by two times vegetable harvest at 40 & 50 DAE (T2). This was caused due to high value of vegetables. The minimum gross return (Tk.59160 ha-1) and gross margin (Tk.23160 ha-1) were in control. The highest BCR (3.07) was at two times vegetable harvest at 60 & 70 DAE and control gave the lowest BCR (1.64). Considering the yield and return it can be concluded that two times shoot picking at 60 & 70 DAE for vegetable is the most profitable as compared to other treatment on the basis of economic. It should be continued for the next season for further confirmation.
