A field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi during rabi season 2017-18 to study the effect of on phenology, growth and yield under sowing time and seed rate of BARI Masur-8. The experiment was laid with three sowing dates (15 November, 1 December, 15 December) in main plots and four seed rates (30 kg ha-1, 35 kg ha-1, 40 kg ha-1and 45 kg ha-1) in sub-plots replicated thrice in a split-plot design. Lentil sown on 15 November took 110 days from sowing to maturity, which was decreased by 12 days on 01 December and 15 days on 15 December sowings. Lentil sown on 1 December at the seed rate of 35 kg ha-1 was produced the highest seed yield (2708 kg ha-1) and stover yield (4725 kg ha-1).

It is needed to evaluate the changes of phenology, GDD, growth and yield and find out the appropriate seed rate according to the sowing time of BARI Masur-8.

The field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi season 2017-18. The soils of the experimental areas belong to the High Gangis River Flood Plain (AEZ 11). The soils of the experimental plots were clay loam in texture. The experiment was laid in a split-plot design with three sowing dates (15 November, 1 December, 15 December) in main plots and four seed rates (30 kg ha-1, 35 kg ha-1, 40 kg ha-1and 45 kg ha-1) in sub-plots replicated thrice. The unit plot size was 12 m2 (3 m x 4m). The lands were fertilized with 20-20-20 NPK kg N-P-K ha-1, respectively and all the fertilizers were applied at final land preparation. Seeds of BARI Masur-8 were sown at 30 cm row spacing in experimental plots as per sowing time of various main plot treatments. One hand weeding was done 25 days after sowing (DAS) for controlling the weed. Rovral(@ 2 g L-1) were used two times for controlling diseases at 60 DAS and 70 DAS. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and grain yield (kg ha-1) was recorded from the whole plot. The MSTAT-C software package was used for all statistical analyses. The mean differences between treatments were separated by the least significant difference (LSD) at P≤ 0.05 for the measured variables.

The duration of lentil crop was successively reduced with a delay in sowing from November 15 to December 15. Lentil sown on 15 November took 110 days from sowing to maturity, which was decreased by 12 days on 1 December and 15 days on 15 December sowings in the study. The trends during emergence to flower initiation and pod initiation to maturity noted in the study probably influenced the life cycle of lentil crops. The emergence of seedlings of three sowing times was relatively faster (6.00 days) on 15 November sown plots compared to two later sowing dates viz. December 1(08 days) and December 15(9 days), which might be due to low temperature during the winter season. Flower initiations of three sowing times (15 November, 1 December and 15 December) were 70, 65 and 60, respectively. The highest dry matter accumulation (348 g m-2) was obtained from seed rate 40 kg on 1st December and the lowest dry matter accumulation (225g m-2) was found from seed rate 30 kg on 15 November at 90 days after emergence. Sowing time significantly influenced the plant height, number of pods plant-1, thousand seed weight, seed yield and stover yield of lentil. The highest plant height (47 cm) was recorded at sowing on 1 December and the lowest plant height (39 cm) was on 15 December. Lentil sown on 1 December produced the highest number of pods plant-1 (171) compared to early (82) and late (79) sowings. The highest grain yield (2628 kg ha-1) was found from 1 December and the lowest yield (1734 kg ha-1) from 15 December. Seed rate had a significant influence on plant height, a number of pods plant-1, seed yield and stover yield of lentil. The highest plant height (45 cm) was at 45 kg ha-1seed rate and the lowest plant height (41 cm) was at 30 kg ha-1 seed rate. But, the seed rate of 35 kg ha-1produced the highest number of pods plant-1 (125), seed yield (2338 kg ha-1) and stover yield (4132 kg ha-1). On the other hand, a seed rate of 30 kg ha-1was produced the lowest seed yield (2131 kg ha-1) and stover yield (2925 kg ha-1). Lentil is sown on 1 December at the seed rate of 35 kg ha-1was also produced the highest seed yield (2708 kg ha-1) and stover yield (4725 kg ha-1).
