The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna and Regional Pulses Research Station, Madaripur during 2017-18 to find out the effective and economic fungicide in controlling stemphylium blight of lentil. Six fungicides were tested for their efficacy against the disease. Stemphylium blight disease severity was measured using a 0 to 5 rating scale. The lowest severity was observed in Nativo (1.67) (Tebuconazole 25%+ Trifloxystrobin 25%) sprayed plots which were statistically similar to Folicur (Tebuconazole) (1.66) and companion (2.33). The highest yield (1905 Kg/ha) was obtained from Nativo sprayed plots which performed similar to Folicur (1735 Kg/ha), Secure (1648 Kg/ha) and Rovral (1658 Kg/ha) sprayed plots. The lowest yield (1337 Kg/ha) was recorded from Indofil treated and control plot. The economic analysis demonstrated that Folicur treatment incurred the highest Marginal Benefit-Cost Ratio (MBCR 5.5) followed by Secure (4.3).

The present study was conducted to search for new fungicides for the management of stemphylium blight of lentil.

The experiment was conducted at the Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, and Regional Pulses Research Station, Madaripur during 2017-18. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The plot size was 5 m x 4 m and the distance between the two rows was 30 cm. The seed of susceptible variety BARI Masur-1 was sown continuously in rows on November 26, 2017.  Six fungicidal treatments viz. T1 = Rovral (Iprodione 10%) @ (2g/L), T2 = Secure (Mancozeb 50% + Fenamidone 10%) @ (2g/L), , T3 = Folicur EW 250 (Tebuconazole 25 %) @ (2ml/L), T4 = Nativo (Tebuconazole 25 %+ Trifloxystrobin 25%) @ (2g/L), T5 = Companion (Mancozeb 63% + Carbendazim 12%) @ (2g/L), T6 = Indofil (Mancozeb @ (2g/L) and water spray was considered as T7 = control. Intercultural operations were done in order to maintain the normal hygienic condition of the crop. Weeding was done at 20 days and 50 days after sowing. Fungicides were sprayed three times starting from the first appearance of the disease and continued at an interval of 7 days. Control plots were sprayed with sterilized water. The experiment was monitored regularly to observe the onset of Stemphylium blight disease. Before harvesting the crop, five plants were picked up randomly from each plot for recording the data of plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and grain yield. Disease severity scale (0-5) was used for rating of Stemphylium blight as 0 = No infection, 1 = Few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted, 2 = 5–10% leaflet infection and/or few scattered 1% twigs blighted, 3 = 11–20% leaflet infection and/or 1–5 % twigs blighted, 4 = 21– 50% leaflet infection and/or 6–10 % twigs blighted and 5 = 51% leaflet infection and/or = 10% twigs blighted developed by Bakr and Ahmed (1992). The data were analyzed statistically using the R programming language (www.r-project.org) for calculating the mean values and test of significance. The variations among treatments were compared following Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Although treatment of Nativo (Tebuconazole  +Trifloxystrobin), Companion and Secure provided the good control application of Folicur (Tebuconazole) @ 2ml/l commencing from the appearance of Stemphylium blight disease symptom at an interval of 7 days has provided the highest economic return. Choice of the fungicide for disease management is important; however, the level of net returns depends on other factors, such as fungicide cost, number and frequency of applications, and disease intensity and growth stage at which fungicide sprays are initiated. Our study contributes with additional findings related to the economic effect of fungicide applications to prevent stemphylium disease on lentil production. The study illustrates the applicability of a low-cost fungicide Folicur in evaluating net returns from fungicide applications. It is noteworthy that Folicur performed similar consistent results in reducing disease severity and provided the highest economic return during the previous three consecutive year’s trial. So this finding assists lentil farmers about their choice of using fungicides on the basis of future net returns. Finally, three times application of Folicur @ 2ml/L at 7 days interval could be recommended for management of Stemphylium blight disease of lentil in Bangladesh.
