Screening of Lentil Germplasm Against Stemphylium Blight (2017--2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The screening trial was conducted with 27 accessions based on the previous year’s evaluation for Stemphylium Blight (SB) resistance at Pulses Research Centre (PRC), Ishurdi, Pabna. These accessions were screened in a natural field environment and showed varying levels of resistance. Lentil variety BARI Masur-1 (susceptible) was used as a check throughout the experiment. The highest frequency of resistance to SB was found in BLX-06004-2, ILL-6367 and ILL-6325 (1.56) and yielded1682, 1668 and 1577 (Kg/ha) respectively. These lines were selected from three years trial among hundreds of lentil lines received from ICARDA and now they could be used in lentil breeding for stemphylium blight resistance.

Objectives:

The present study was conducted to continue the search for resistant genotypes against SB disease of lentil in natural inoculation conditions.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Regional Pulses Research Station, Madaripur, and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jashore during 2017-18. Twenty-seven lentils advanced entries were collected from the Pulse Pathology and Breeding section of PRC, Ishurdi, Pabna to observe stemphylium blight disease. Each line was sown in a single row of 4m length allowing a susceptible check (BARI Masur-1) after every 2 test lines with continuous sowing of seed. Three replications were used having a line-to-line distance of 40 cm. The seeds were sown from November 15 to December 15, 2017. Infected crop debris from the previous year was spread between rows to build up Stemphylium inocula. The experiment was monitored regularly and intercultural operations were done as recommended by PRC. The disease severity was scored according to 0-5 scale (Bakr and Ahmed 1992) where 0 = no infection (HR), 1 = a few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted (R), 2 = 5–10% leaflet infection and/or a few scattered (1%) twigs blighted (MR), 3 = 11–20% leaflet infection and/or 1–5% twigs blighted (MS), 4 = 21–50% leaflet infection and/or 6–10% twigs blighted (S), and 5 = 51% leaflet infection and/or = 10% twigs blighted (HS).The data were analyzed statistically using the R programming language (www.r-project.org).

Achievement/Findings:

The screening result revealed a significant difference among the lines which became well pronounced in all the tested parameters. All the test entries varied significantly considering their disease severity and yield. The lowest stemphylium blight disease severity was recorded in BLX-06004-2 (1.56), ILL- 6367 (1.56), and ILL-6325 (1.67) and the highest severity (3.78) was found in BARI Masur-1. Disease severity was also observed higher in some test entries. The highest yield (1682 Kg/ha) was produced by the entry BLX-06004-2 and the lowest yield was harvested from BARI Masur-1 (956 kg/ha). Considering disease score and yield, seven lentil lines viz. BLX-06004-2, ILL- 6367, ILL-6325 ILL-6314, ILL-6321, ILL-5082, ILL-5109,and LRIL-22-70 have the potential to continue research in regards to breeding for stemphylium disease resistance. The results from the present study would contribute to relevant scientific knowledge that will help with the development of an effective breeding strategy for SB resistance in lentil.
