Influence of Temperature and Humidity on Development of Stemphylium Blight Disease of Lentil (2017--2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Plant Pathology Division, RARS, Jashore and Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during Rabi 2017-18 to find out optimum planting time and actual temperature and humidity on the development of Stemphylium blight of lentil in a Randomized Complete Block Design. There are five treatments such as sowing date 15^th November, 25^th November, 5^th December, 15^th December, and 25^th December. Among the treatments, where planting date was 25^th November 2017 showed reduced disease severity and increased yield. It may be recommended that lentil production could be possible if it is sowing from mid-November to late December.

Objectives:

This experiment was conducted to find out optimum planting time and actual environment for development of disease

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Plant Pathology Division, RARS, Jashore and Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during Rabi 2017-18. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The plot size was 5 m x 4 m and the distance between the two rows was 30 cm. The seed of susceptible variety BARI Masur-1 was sown continuously in rows. Five planting time were applied such as T₁= 15 November, T₂= 25 November, T₃= 05 December, T₄= 15 December, and T₅= 15 December. Fertilizer and other intercultural operations were applied as per recommendation by PRC, BARI. Stemphylium blight was rated on a 0-5 scoring scale (Bakr and Ahmed, 1992, Bakr et al., 2000) where, 0 = no infection (HR), 1= few scattered leaf infection but no twig blighted (MR), 2 = 5-10% leaf infected and or few scattered twig blighted (MR), 3 = 11-20% leaflet infected and /or 1-5% twigs blighted (MS), 4 = 21-50% leaflet infected and /or 6-10% twigs blighted (S) and 5= above 51% leaflet infected and /or more than 10% twigs blighted (HS). Data on disease severity and yield contributing characters such as plant height, number of plants per m², number of pods per plant and finally yield were taken.

Achievement/Findings:

The effects of planting time on disease development were recorded. The lowest stemphylium score was (2.2) observed in T₅(sowing date at 25^th December 2017) which was statistically different from other treatments. The highest score (4.5) was recorded from T₁ plots where the planting date was 15^th November 2017 followed by T₂and T₃ plots. There is no significant difference in plant height among the treatments but in the case of plant population, the highest (198) was found in the 15 November sowing plot and the lowest (138) in the 25 December sowing plot. On the other hand, the highest yield (1550 kg/ha) was found in the 25 November sowing plot which was statistically similar to T₁and T₃ plots and the lowest (1069 kg/ha) was in T₅(sowing date at 25^th December 2017) It was observed that there was no rainfall after 2^nd week of November to the last week of March 2018 and during this period temperature and humidity were suitable for lentil production. So, this year lentil production is higher than in the previous two years. In the case of, Stemphylium blight disease incidence the plants which were sown on 15 November showed higher disease score compare to late sowing and lower in 25 December sowing plots. The disease score was lower because the plant population is lower and air movement frequently and canopy temperature was not suitable for disease development.

This season's weather was very harsh for lentil production in the early stage because in the month of October and early November heavy rain pour in Ishurdi and Jashore region. From the above study, it may be concluded that lentil production may be possible if it is sowing from mid-November to late December. Micro-climate data were not taken this year for unavailability of the instrument which will be monitored next year
