Screening of Chickpea Germplasm Resistant to Botrytis Gray Mold (bgm) (2017--2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre (PRC), Ishurdi, Pabna, Regional Pulses Research Station, Madaripur, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jashore and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Barishal during 2017-18 to find out high yielding and Botrytis Gray Mold (BGM) disease-resistant variety of chickpea. Twelve chickpea advanced entries were used for this experiment. Due to unfavorable weather conditions to BGM no incidence of disease was occurred in this season in PRC, Ishurdi but presented in other locations. The highest seed yield (1617 Kg/ha) was recorded from BCX 09015-7 followed by BCX 09010-2, BCX 08008-1, BCX 09010-9, and BCX 08009-and the lowest was in BCX09010-6.

Objectives:

The present investigation has been carried out to test the genotypes resistant to chickpea for Botrytis Gray Mold (BGM). The identified genotypes can be exploited in a breeding program to develop resistant varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Regional Pulses Research Station, Madaripur, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Barishal and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jashore during 2017-18. Twelve chickpea advanced entries were collected from the Pulse pathology and plant breeding section, Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna. Each line was sown in a double row of 5m length allowing a susceptible check (BARI Chola-1) after every 2 test lines with continuous sowing of seed. Three replications were used having a line-to-line distance of 50 cm. The seeds were sown from 7^th to 25th December 2017. The experiment was monitored regularly to observe BGM disease. The crop was harvested after maturity. Data on disease severity was recorded on a 1-9 rating scale (Singh D. P. and Kant L. 1999) at the time of harvest. Due to unfavorable weather conditions to BGM no incidence of disease was occurred in this season in PRC, Ishurdi but presented in other locations. In these circumstances, data from two locations were considered for analysis. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot seed yield was recorded from the whole plot and converted into Kg/ha. The data were analyzed statistically using GenStat version 18.

Achievement/Findings:

No Botrytis Gray mold disease was appeared in this season at the experiment field of Ishurdi but presented in other locations. The results from the other two locations trial demonstrated that all the genotypes are erected but less branched. Yield and yield contributing characters of the entries were recorded. The maximum number of plant population (55) was recorded in BCX 06004-10 and the minimum (42) was in BARI Chola-1. The highest plant height (61.2 cm) was recorded in BCX 09015-7 and the lowest (47) in ICCV-98801. The highest disease severity score (3.8) was recorded in BARI Chola-1, BCX09010-6 and ICCV-98801 followed by BCX 08009-9, BCX 08008-1, BCX 09015-7, BCX 09010-2, and ICCV 93706 and the lowest in BCX 06004-10 BCX 09010-9 and ICCV92944. The highest seed yield (1617 Kg/ha) was recorded from BCX 09015-7 followed by BCX 09010-2, BCX 08008-1, BCX 09010-9, and BCX 08009-and the lowest was in BCX09010-6.

With the findings of the present study, it could not be concluded that all of these genotypes were observed as resistant to Botrytis Gray Mold Disease. To identify a resistant source, favorable artificial environment should be created to provoke disease then a resistance source could be identified.
