Field Screening of Grasspea Germplasm Against Rust and Powdery Mildew in Natural Condition (2017--2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Regional Pulses Research Station (RPRS), BARI, Madaripur during Rabi 2017-18 to find out the suitable and high yielding genotypes/variety of grasspea against rust and powdery mildew. Six genotypes/lines including one check BARI Kheshari-3 were evaluated in the trial. The result revealed that all the germplasm showed resistant reaction against powdery mildew. Rust was not developed among the entries. The line BGP-130010 gave the highest yield (1654 kg/ha) and the lowest yield (1208 kg/ha) was obtained from BGP-13007.

Objectives:

It is essential to develop a disease-resistant high-yielding variety. With this view, the study was undertaken to screen disease-resistant and high-yielding germplasm.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RPRS, Madaripur during the Rabi season of 2017-18 to find out the suitable germplasm of grasspea. There were 250 grasspea germplasms collected from PRC, Ishurdi, Pabna in 2013-14 and screened at RPRS, Madaripur. From the result of that year, 10 best-performed lines were screened again in 2016-17. In that year, from ten germplasms six were selected considering their yield parameters. In this year, six of those germplasms including one check BARI Kheshari-3 were evaluated for the second year. Six germplasms were viz. BGP-13004, BGP-13006, BGP-13007, BGP-13008, BGP-13009 and BGP-13010. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m × 4m and spacing was 40 cm×05 cm. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and covered by soils on 21 November 2017. All recommended fertilizers were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. Powdery mildew (Erysiphe poligoni or Oidium sp.) of mungbean was recorded on a 0-5 scoring scale (Gawande and Patil, 2003) used in this experiment. The scale described as Voliam Flexi 300SC (0.1%) was sprayed for control of thrips and pod borer. The crop was harvested after maturity. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Grain yield (kg/ha) was recorded from the whole plot. Data were analyzed statistically by using MSTAT-C program.

Achievement/Findings:

In the experiment tested genotypes/variety showed significant differences from one another in respect of growth and yield contributing characters. Days to flowering varied from 71-76. The ranges in days to maturity were varied from 122-124. The number of branches/plants varied from 4.70-6.27. The maximum number of branches/ plant (6.27) was recorded in BGP-13008 and the minimum in BGP-13010. Plant height ranged from 44.80-75.27 cm. The highest (75.27 cm) plant height was recorded in BGP-13008 and the lowest (44.80 cm) in BGP-13004. The number of pods/plants varied from 18.33-29.27. The maximum (29.27) number of pods/plant obtained in BGP-13010 and the minimum (18.33) in BGP-13004. The number of seeds/pod varied from 3.68-3.88. The maximum (3.88) number of seeds/pod counted in BGP-13008 and the minimum (3.40) in BGP-13004. 100 seed weight ranged from 5.57-8.17. The highest weight (8.17 g) of 100 seeds obtained from BGP-13006 where the lowest (5.57 g) in BGP-130010. All the germplasm along with check showed their resistance score which ranged from 1.00-13. The yield (kg/ha) varied from 1208-1654. The highest yield (1654 kg/ha) recorded in BGP-130010 followed by (1492 kg/ha) in BARI Kheshari-3 and the lowest (1208 kg/ha) obtains from BGP-13007.

With the findings of the study, it could be concluded that among the tested genotype BGP-130010 produced the highest grain yield (1654 kg/ha) followed by (1415 kg/ha) in BGP-13006. Both genotypes also performed resistant reactions against powdery mildew disease. So, the genotype BGP-13006 and BGP-130010 could be used for crop improvement.
