The experiment was conducted at the Pulse Research Sub-station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur farm during Kharif-1 season of 2017 to find out optimum rates of boron for growth and yield of blackgram. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. The treatments were T1= Control, T2 = 20-20-20-10-2-0.5 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1, T3= 20-20-20-10-2-1.0 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1, T4=20-20-20-10-2-1.5 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1, T5=20-20-20-10-2-2.0 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1, T6=20-20-20-10-2-2.5 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1. Application of B on blackgram ponded positively and contributed to achieving higher yield over control treatment to a different extent. Treatment T3= 20-20-20-10-2-1.0 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1 gave the highest seed yield 1141 kg/ha which was 38 % higher than the control treatment.

The experiment was undertaken to study the requirement of boron on the growth and yield of blackgram

The experimental site was of medium-high land belonging to the Madhupur Tract under Agro-Ecological Zone 28 (UNDP & FAO, 1988). The experiment was conducted at the Pulse Research Sub-station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during Kharif-II season of 2017 to find out the requirement of boron on the growth and yield and optimum rates of boron for blackgram. The design of the experiment was RCB with 3 replications. Each treatment was sown in unit plot having 3m × 4m with the spacing of 30 cm between rows. Spacing between two plots and replications to replication were 1m and 1.5m respectively. BARI Mash-3 was used as a variety in the experiment. Treatments included in the experiment were: T1=20-20-20-10-2 kg NPKSZn/ha-1, T2=20-20-20-10-2-0.5 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1, T3=20-20-20-10-2-1.0 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1, T4=20-20-20-10-2-1.5 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1, T5= 20-20-20-10-2-2.0 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1, T6=20-20-20-10-2-2.5 kg NPKSZnB/ha-1. Seeds were sown on September 14, 2017, and harvested on 2nd December 2017 maintaining 30-row distances in a continuous line. Weeding was done 20 days after the emergence of the crop. Grain yield was calculated from the whole plot. Yield contributing characters were taken from 10 randomly selected plants from the middle rows of each plot. Data were analyzed with the help of a computer package program R and means were separated following LSD test at a 5% level of significance.

Plant height was almost similar among the fertilizer treatment ranged from 23.73 to 26.80 cm though the highest was taller in T3 (26.80 cm) and control the lowest T1 (23.73cm). The number of branch/plant did not differ significantly ranged from 3-4 with the difference in fertilizer treatment the highest number of branch/plant was produced in treatment T3 (4.40) followed by T4 (4.33) and T2 in (4.20). The result presented in Table 2 revealed that except days to flowering, days to maturity did not differ significantly among the treatments. Days to flowering ranged from 36-38 days. The highest number of pod/plant was found from 20-20-20-10-2-1 kg NPKSZnB/ha (T3) where extra 1.0 kg B/ha were applied and the lowest in control treatment 20-20-20-10-2-0 kg NPKSZnB/ha (T1) where no B was applied. The hundred seed weight did not differ significantly among the treatments except T1 (control). No significant difference was observed in pod length and seed/pod among the treatment which respectively ranged from 4.0 - 4.36cm and 5.73-6.33. The highest seed yield was recorded in T3 (1141 kg/ha) followed by T4 (1104 kg/ha) T5 (1095 kg/ha) T6 (1001 kg/ha) and control (T1) produced the least (824kg/ha). No significant difference was observed in stover yield among the treatment. Application of B @ 1.0 kg/ha might influence the yield of blackgram to achieve a higher yield without any statistical significance. From the two years experiment, it was obvious that application of B @ 1 kg ha-1 increased the yield substantially over the control treatment (T1) even the increment in seed yield of blackgram was significantly higher (20 and 38%) using a higher dose of B @ 2.0 kg ha-1 

The highest gross return (Tk. 47040 ha-1) and gross margin (Tk. 23550 ha-1) were obtained from T3 treatment. Total variable cost (Tk. 23940 ha-1) was highest in T6 treatment. The benefit-cost ratio (BCR) was also highest (2.00) in T3 treatment. The gross margin in T3 treatment increased by 75% over the control (T1) treatment.
