Characterization of Yard Long Bean Germplasm (2014--2015)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty five accessions of yard long bean were characterized at Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Gazipur during Kharif-1 of 2014 to evaluate their genetic performance within the germplasm collected from different parts of the Bangladesh. The accessions showed vast variation in the qualitative characters of growth habit, terminal leaf shape, pod color, pod surface, seed shape, pod length, girth and pod weight etc. The highest coefficient of variation (38.01) was observed in pod length, pod weight, fruit weight and lowest coefficient of variation (12.94) found in days to harvest green pod and days to flowering respectively.

Objectives:

The purpose of this study was to characterize various yard long bean accessions to get proper morphological information, which can be used by the breeder for appropriate breeding program. Also conserve these valuable genetic materials for future purpose.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the central research farm of PGRC, BARI, Gazipur during Kharif season of 2014. Under this study 35 germplasm were collected and evaluated to find their phenotypic and yield variation. The germplasm was collected from different parts of Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in a non-replicated trail having unit plot of 6 m x 1.2 m maintaining 60 cm x 50 cm plant spacing with 60 cm drain Seeds were sown on 28 April, 2014. Manure and fertilizers were applied @ cowdung 10 ton, Urea 50 kg, TSP 150 kg, MP 100 kg and Gypsum 150 kg per hectare. The entire quantity of cowdung, TSP and half of urea and MP were applied during final land preparation and rest of the amount of urea and MP were applied at 15 and 30 days after seed sowing. Intercultural operations like irrigation, weeding, mulching, thinning were done and plant protection measures were taken as when necessary. All the observations were made according to the methods of IBPGR descriptor (1995). Data on the following characters has been recorded. Data in respect of yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and mean data were analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Qualitative variations of different characters in the yard-long bean accessions were recorded. Among the accessions dwarf (7) and twining (28) type growth habits were found. Twining tendency was pronounced (22) and intermediate (13). The terminal leaf shape of the majority germplasm was ovate (27), broadly ovate (5) and hastate (3) also found. Pod color was uniformly colored (29). Pod surface was smooth (12), moderately rough (19) and rough (4). Most accessions produced kidney shape (29) seed, another shape ovoid (2), crowder (1) and rhomboid (3) was found. Range, mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of different quantitative characters were shown in Table 2. Quantitative characters are the yield contributing factors. Days to flowering range from 44 to 69. Average 64.09 days required to the first harvest of the green pod. Pod per peduncle was ranged from 1 to 3.2 and it showed a higher coefficient of variation. There was a far variation in pod length and width, here the highest co-efficient of variation observed. Pod length was higher as 59.6 cm and lower as 13.2cm, on the other hand, pod girth was ranged from 0.33cm to 0.86cm and average 0.52cm. The average pod weight was 19.71 gm. The number of seeds per pod was higher in a long pod and lower in short size pod, it averages 14.11. Seed weight was varied due to seed size. Considering yield contribution factors and other quality BD-1517, BD-1527, BD-1528, BD- 1529, BD-9830, BD-9831, BD-9833, BD-10073, BD-10078, BD-10082, BD-10084, BD-10085, BD-10290 and BD-10292 were performed better. Variability found in different character such as plant growth habit, terminal leaf shape, pod color, pod surface, seed shape, pod length, girth and pod weight etc. Some accessions were selected for better performances. The variation of these accessions can be used further for a specific breeding program or varietal development purpose. Seeds of the accessions were conserved in the gene bank.
