Regeneration of Conserved Accessions of Tomato (2014--2015)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study on regeneration of five tomato accessions was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Gazipur during the winter season 2014-15. Eighteen qualitative data were recorded. Maximum variation was found on predominant fruit shape i.e. flattened, cylindrical, heart-shape. The plant size was observed as small, intermediate, and large. The maximum seed weight was 242.20 g of the accession BD-7760.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken for increasing viability of the conserved accessions.

Methodology:

Five accessions of tomato were regenerated during Rabi season of 2014-2015 at PGRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The date of sowing was on 23 October, 2014. The seedling of each accession was planted in 3 m plot. Spacing 50cm X 60 cm was maintained. Recommended fertilizer and cultural practices were done. The data was recorded as per IPGRI descriptors for tomato (IPGRI, 1990). The first harvest was stared on 6 Feb to 25 March 2015.

Achievement/Findings:

Regeneration of five conserved tomato accessions was studied for increasing viability and seed quantity. All accessions showed green colour hypocotyls, yellow corolla colour, normal anthocyanin colouration of leaf veins, intermediate stem pubescence density, potato leaf type leaf, small fruit size and ovate seed shape. Three types of predominant fruit shape were found i.e flattened, cylindrical, heart-shaped and plant size was observed small, intermediate, large. The other character showed two types of variation such as light green and greenish-white exterior colour of immature fruit, horizontal and drooping leaf attitude, indeterminate and semi-determinate plant growth type, indented and flat fruit blossom end shape, red and orange exterior colour of mature fruit, moderately depressed saint-pierre and flat rossol fruit shoulder shape, red and orange flesh colour of pericarp, angular and round fruit cross-sectional shape, indented and flat fruit blossom end shape and grey and brown seed colour.

The maximum seed weight was recorded 242.2 g for BD- 7760 followed by 116.76 g for BD-7759. The lowest seed weight was 12.57 g for BD-7749.
